Coat Ceremony
Each fall, members of the freshman class at the University of Michigan Medical School don their first white coats - coats that signify entry into the field of medicine. In doing so, the 170 medical students take part in a rite of passage that emphasizes a doctor's responsibility to patients and to the profession. The ceremony is also an opportunity for friends and families to celebrate. At the same time, students reflect on why they chose the University of Michigan Medical School, and how this decision will benefit their career development.
Each fall,
first-year medical students at the University of Michigan Medical School are
paired with volunteer families to get an understanding of how family, environment,
culture, and lifestyle all play a part in an individual's health. The Family
Centered Experience is one of the innovative programs being instituted as
part of curriculum changes at the University of Michigan Medical School. Watch

With the emotional intensity of the Oscars, the youthful yearnings of the college draft, and the culmination of four years of motivation and training that only medical students can truly imagine, students in the University of Michigan Medical School's Class of 2003 gathered to take part in the National Resident Matching Program. One-by-one, each experienced the random call to the front of the room, received a sealed envelope, and opened it to learn which residency program had selected them for training upon graduation. Approximately 24,000 students participate nationally. Watch the video to find out more.
Information in the medical sciences is growing faster and faster. Health care systems are under increasing pressure to deliver high-quality care in a cost-effective manner. Patients are concerned that health care providers no longer have the time to listen to and understand their personal issues. Because of these changes, educators at the U-M Medical School - one of the country's top medical education programs has made significant curriculum revisions. Starting with the academic year 2003 - 2004, the new plan puts students into patient care settings much earlier than in the earlier curriculum, and in addition to teaching the scientific principles of health and disease, emphasizes communicating with patients, and understanding how the cultural and social contexts in which they live influence their health.
