Leadership Competencies

Enables others to act: creates and sustains an environment that translates UMMC values and the principles of empowerment into daily operations.

Critical Behaviors

  1. Conducts regular forums with staff to identify opportunities for improvement, and remove barriers to work performance.
  2. Develops a climate where risk-taking is rewarded.
  3. Provides staff with continual feedback regarding job performance that is both constructive and reinforcing.
  4. Helps employees balance home and work life.
  5. Facilitate group process so that all members feel included, respected, and encouraged to contribute to organizational goals and team performance.
  6. Identifies how own behavior impacts others before acting.
  7. Incorporates the staff expectations for empowerment into performance planning and review.
  8. Provides a comprehensive orientation for new staff.
  9. Works with staff to identify and remove barriers that prevent improving the work process.
  10. Involves staff in decision making and implementation.
  11. Involves staff in the selection and evaluation of their work teams.
  12. Incorporates staff feedback into the selection and evaluation of management personnel.

  2. Involves staff in identifying expectations for communications and implementing communication plan.
  3. Helps others think through alternatives.
  4. Designs and implements processes which bring together staff across work units/departments.
  5. Involves staff in the review of organizational structure of departments, programs, and work teams.
  6. Partner with other managers and leaders in the organization and achieve institutional objectives.
  7. Works on community issues through service clubs, boards and similar organizations to identify where the resources of the organization can assist with community needs.

Transforms strategy into results: gets results and adds value to the organization by managing strategy to action. Assumes responsibility for achieving business results.

  1. Achieves business results.
  2. Identifies budget problems and takes action to meet budget objectives.
  3. Makes decisions and follows through.
  4. Uses conflict resolution skills effectively and coaches others in skill development.
  5. Uses mutual gains as the preferred dispute resolution method.

Invents best practices: invents and utilizes best practice to make change and achieve results.

Critical Behaviors:

  1. Benchmarks with others to improve work processes.
  2. Uses customer input/feedback to improve products and services.
  3. Specifically implements programs and actions which support UMMC's business goals.
  4. Completes work assignments on time.

Inspires a shared vision and purpose: engages all staff in support of a customer-focused, shared vision of future outcomes and goals.

Critical Behaviors:

  1. Works with staff to integrate the organization's and departmental mission, values, and goals into their daily work.

Thinks Strategically: critically evaluates, synthesizes, and interrelates information from internal and external sources when solving problems and making decisions.

Critical Behaviors:

  1. Evaluates processes and programs based on customer feedback and profitability.
  2. Develops and implements short and long range strategies which are aligned with corporate goals of reducing cost per unit of service and increasing revenues.
  3. Implements strategies to respond to changing financial requirements which impact the success of UMMC.

Seizes Opportunities: takes decisive action on emerging opportunities in a rapidly changing, ambiguous environment.

Critical Behaviors:

  1. Identifies critical strategies, prioritizes, and takes action accordingly.
  2. Identifies and eliminates areas of waste (resources, time, supplies, etc).
  3. Challenges the status quo and champions new initiatives.
  4. Handles day-to-day work challenges confidently; is willing and able to adjusst to multiple demands, ambiguity and rapid change.
  5. Identifies and implements a change model during transition.

Develops Oneself: actively pursues learning and self development.

Critical Behaviors:

  1. Demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning and invests in own growth.
  2. Solicits and incorporates feedback from staff, customers, and supervisors into own performance review.
  3. Meets with staff to jointly develop an action plan to improve own leadership performance.
  4. Develops a professional development plan to address ongoing learning needs.

Ethics and Integrity: demonstrates principled leadership and consistency among principles, values, and behavior.

Critical Behaviors:

  1. Builds trust with others through own actions and follow through on commitment.
  2. Demonstrates behaviors which reflect the organization's values ("walks the talk").
  3. Protects confidential information.
  4. Demonstrates sound business ethics.

Communicates Effectively: effectively communicates, both verbally and in writing, to provide leadership, direction, and feedback.

Critical Behaviors:

  1. Respects ideas and people; seeks to understand others' points of view; clarifies and confirms messages, exhibits body language that is conducive to open communication.
  2. Gives individual attention when listening. Effectively demonstrates use of electronic communication including telephone and electronic mail.
  3. Speaks effectively, clearly communicating thoughts, ideas and information in groups and in one-on-one conversations.
  4. Prepares written material that follows generally accepted rules of style and form, is original and appropriate for the audience, and accomplishes intended purpose.

Effectively Manages Organizational Change: identifies and implements a change management plan that includes transition management strategies.

Critical Behaviors:

  1. Engages the staff in identifying process and organizational changes.
  2. Completes a change management action plan.
  3. Communicates the changes and change strategies that help people understand the organization's direction.
  4. Identifies the impact of change on self and others.
