Is the program open to non-Michigan residents?
No, the SSA program is only open to Michigan residents without
exception.
What
are the dates of the program?
The program typically takes place on the Sunday of the second week of June and ends on the Friday of the third week of June. The 2008 program dates are: June 15th through June 27th. Check website or call us for details.
What if my high school is still in session when the Summer Science Academy begins?
Schools are almost always willing to make arrangements for students
to take their finals early if they are accepted into the Summer Science
Academy.
I have another event to attend to at the same time the orientation
begins. Do I have to attend the orientation?
Yes. All students are to arrive on the first day of the program (Sunday June 15, 2008) and participate in all weekday program activities during the two-week period.
Can I leave for the weekend?
We highly discourage leaving for the weekend since there are many fun-filled
activities planned. If you must leave, you must provide advance
notice (by the first day of the program) and must agree to follow
specific departure (pick-up) and arrival (drop-off) times.
When is the tuition due?
You may pay the tuition in one (2) installment or in two (2) installments. If
you choose to pay in one (1) installment the tuition is due by May 4, 2008. If you choose to pay in two (2) installments, half (1/2)
of the tuition is due by May 4, 2008, and the remaining balance is due by
May 25, 2008. Note: the $50 application fee will be applied to the
tuition. All payments must be in by the first day of the
program in order for students to attend.
Is the Summer Science Academy for
minorities only?
No, the program is not limited to minority students and is open to
all. We are particularly seeking participants from groups that are
underrepresented in medicine, which includes geographically and financially
disadvantaged students. We are hoping for a very diverse participant
pool.
Is my 9th grade daughter/son eligible?
No. The program is open to current 10th and 11th grade students only.
Is my 12th grade daughter/son eligible?
No. The program is open to current 10th and 11th grade students only.
Can I do the program more than once?
No. You can only participate in Summer Science Academy once.
To whom should the checks be made out?
All Checks should be payable to the University
of Michigan.
What kind of photo should I send?
A passport type photo is preferred, but any photo that could be used
for a yearbook type composite (shoulder and head shot) is acceptable.
Can I attend a place of worship over the weekend during the
program?
Yes. We will provide transportation and a chaperone to any
house of worship in Ann Arbor.
Is my $50 application fee refundable?
Yes, only if you are not admitted to the program. If you are not admitted to the program, your $50 application fee is refundable. If you are admitted to the program, and decided not to attend, your $50 application fee is refundable until May 4, 2008. If you are admitted to the program and decide to attend, your $50 application fee is applied to the cost of the program.
What is the cost of the program?
There is a $1500 program fee; this covers all expenses including food & lodging,
course materials and weekend and evening activities. Payment
can be made in two installments. However, full and partial scholarships
are available based on financial need. Don’t let the program
fee stop you from applying.
Can I have visitors?
Only family members can visit participants, during breaks in the program
schedule, and only with prior permission and notification
of Academy staff.
Do we have to participate in evening activities?
Yes, all SSA participants are required to participate in evening activities.
Will we have access to a gym during the Academy?
No. However, participants have played outdoor games and sports
and can make arrangements with the student leaders, though.
Can I bring my own food?
Yes, but only items that do not need to be refrigerated. We provide
three meals per day plus snacks.
Can I leave for a short period of time during the week?
No, unless a student has to attend a mandatory government appointment
(e.g. immigration). In this case, students are allowed to leave
for a short period of time. Failure to abide by this policy
will result in immediate dismissal. NO REFUNDS. NO EXCEPTIONS. |
