As defined by federal statute, a rare disease is one affecting fewer than 200,000 persons in the United States. Although individually these are small numbers, collectively they affect 25 million people in this country alone and one in ten individuals are diagnosed with a rare disease. There are over 6,000 known diseases in the world that are categorized as a rare disease. (For more information, visit: http://rarediseases.info.nih.gov/.)

The 2007 Biomedical Research Symposium on “Rare and Orphan Diseases,” sponsored by the Office of Research, will focus on recent molecular advances in some of the major categories of rare and orphan diseases. Speakers will also briefly address the challenges that face scientists and new opportunities available through technical advances.

The symposium will feature talks by internationally recognized leaders in the field. Researchers at U-M and external colleagues will be invited to present their work at a poster session. The goal of this symposium is to foster networks and collaborations within and outside U-M in “Rare and Orphan Diseases” – a topic of great importance in health and medicine today.

The symposium will be of particular interest to faculty, graduate and medical students, postdoctoral fellows and residents studying the basic mechanisms and clinical implications of rare diseases. Attendees will learn about recent molecular advances in various categories of rare diseases, mechanism of disease progression and development of treatments.
