RESEARCH COMPLIANCE TRAINING AND EDUCATION
Human Research
Since its inception at UMHS, MiChart use for research has grown enormously: As of December 2012, more than 22,000 patients are listed in more than 1100 research studies. Similarly, since its opening to the public, the use of the Patient Portal of MiChart (MyUofMHealth.org) has grown. By late September, only six weeks after being launched, over 14,000 patients had created active accounts.
Research subjects who have lab tests, radiology studies, or receive outpatient medication as part of a research study can normally access this information via the Patient Portal at MyUofMHealth.org. Therefore, in blinded or masked studies where the integrity of the study would be compromised if the subjects viewed their research test results or their list of outpatient medications, specific actions must be taken to prevent the subjects from being unblinded.
It is not possible to shield outpatient medication lists from a subject’s view at this time. If viewing an outpatient medication list would unblind the subject, the subject should be instructed to not view the medication list.
Lab and radiology test results can be shielded from the subject through notification of MCIT. Note that once the subject’s view of the Patient Portal in MyUofMHealth.org is limited in this way, subjects will not be able to see any test results whether they were conducted for clinical or research purposes. Subjects will still be able to utilize all other functionality of the Patient Portal such as refilling prescriptions, paying bills, setting up appointments, etc.
Full instructions for limiting Patient Portal access and the accompanying Informed Consent modifications and procedures are available on the IRBMED website.
If you have any questions regarding this issue, please contact IRBMED at irbmed@umich.edu or 734-763-4768.
