Meet the Challenge of the Mentored Research Academy: R01 Boot Camp! Apply by Dec. 3
R01 Boot Camp

Mentees – Seize this opportunity for guidance, camaraderie, and productivity!
Mentors – Sign up to help guide, share wisdom, and have fun!

The UMMS Mentored Research Academy: R01 Boot Camp is a multi-tiered, pilot program funded by Dean James O. Woolliscroft to support and increase the success rate of Medical School faculty applying for their first NIH Research Project Grant (R01). The R01 Boot Camp is an eight-month program (Jan. 2013 - Sept. 2013) comprised of the following:

  1. Large group events designed to provide mentees with the tools and knowledge they need to write a successful R01 application, including David Morrison’s widely acclaimed all-day workshop, “Write Winning Grant Proposals.”
  2. Peer group activities of 5-6 faculty members, where mentees share work products (i.e., research plans and proposal sections), provide constructive feedback to one another, and address issues of mutual interest.
  3. Faculty coaches with established track records of external funding and a commitment to mentoring, who meet with and advise their mentee peer group.
  4. Internal subject matter experts, who provide 1:1 counsel on mentees’ research plans and designs, help them prepare and present a chalk talk, and review proposal drafts.
  5. External subject matter experts, who review mentees’ final proposals.

Mentees and coaches alike will benefit from the program. Mentees (40 in the pilot) will learn the ropes of getting a successful NIH-funded research program off the ground under the tutelage of successful UMMS faculty, will increase their chances at getting a funded R01, and will establish new professional networks and collegial relationships with like-minded peers.  Coaches, in addition to a salary and hosting supplement, will gain satisfaction from sharing their wisdom, advice, and insight, and from seeing their mentees develop significant, funded research programs.

If you are interested in participating in the R01 Boot Camp as either a mentee or coach, self-nominate by submitting the brief application forms found on the program website by December 3, 2012.

Questions regarding this program should be directed to R01BootCamp@umich.edu.

Animal Research

New UCUCA Training Requirements

The University Committee on Use and Care of Animals (UCUCA) has been working for several months on revisions to the training requirements for animal users at the University of Michigan. These will ensure we remain compliant with all applicable federal guidelines and meet the needs of our research community.  According to Principle VIII of the U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research, and Training, “Investigators and other personnel shall be appropriately qualified and experienced for conducting procedures on living animals.” Additionally, according to the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, “Personnel using or caring for animals should also participate regularly in continuing education activities relevant to their responsibilities.” Finally, according to the regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, “It shall be the responsibility of the research facility to ensure that all scientists, research technicians, animal technicians, and other personnel involved in animal care, treatment, and use are qualified to perform their duties. This responsibility shall be fulfilled in part through the provision of training and instruction to those personnel.”

With recent revisions to The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and to remain compliant with the U.S. Government Principles and the Animal Welfare Act, the UCUCA will implement the following changes to the training requirements for all animal users:

As of January 1, 2013, protocols and amendments will not be approved until training requirements, for personnel associated with protocols/amendments, have been completed. This will involve the completion of online training modules based on the information provided in the animal use protocol and animal handling details. The UCUCA wants to stress the importance of ensuring the experience and qualifications of personnel to conduct procedures involving live animals.

If you have any questions regarding your training requirements, we encourage you to check your training status in MLearning. You may also contact the ULAM Training Core at 734-763-8039 or ulam-trainingcore@med.umich.edu. For matters involving your animal use protocol, please contact the UCUCA Office at 734-763-8028 or ucuca-office@med.umich.edu.

The UCUCA appreciates the efforts of our animal users to ensure the welfare of animals and to ensure a quality animal care and use program at the University of Michigan.

SHARPENING THE FOCUS:

Tips on Grant Proposal Preparation

Too Ambitious?

By Chris Black, M.L.S., Assistant Director for Research Services, Office of Research

(This is one in a series of tips published in UMMS Research News about writing proposals.)

A common reviewer critique in NIH grant applications – especially for new investigators – is that the project is “too ambitious.” According to William Gerin, Ph.D. (Pennsylvania State University, and author, Writing the NIH Grant Proposal: A Step-by-Step Guide, SAGE Books, 2006), “The ‘A’ word… is code for your inexperience is showing.”

There may be several reasons why a reviewer feels that the PI has outreached his or her capabilities, or that the scope is unrealistic:

  • Reviewers question the feasibility of the project within the time and resources (both human and physical) described in the application.
  • The PI is not experienced enough in either the field or the methods.
  • The problem is more complex than PI realizes.
  • The PI is naive about potential pitfalls/alternative approaches.
  • The budget is unrealistic.
  • There are too many investigators involved for the PI to manage and coordinate.

NIAID suggests evaluating your “BEST”

  • Budget: asking for too little is a sign that you do not understand the scope (be realistic!).
  • Effort: an insufficient level shows you are unaware of how much work needs to be done.
  • Specific Aims: not having the appropriate number/conceptualization.
  • Time: requesting too few years indicates you think your work will take less time than adequate for scope of project.

A good way to avoid the A word is to share a proposal draft with experienced colleagues before submitting.
