November 12, 2012
12:00 - 1:00 PM
Ford Auditorium, University Hospital
Don't miss the next Research Town Hall! Sponsored by the UMMS Office of Research and the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR), the focus of this event will be research funding and education & mentoring opportunities, with a variety of speakers presenting. A Q&A session will follow the presentations.
A light lunch will be provided outside the auditorium before the event starts.
On April 7, 2008 the National Institutes of Health made it mandatory for all researchers who hold an NIH grant to comply with its Public Access Policy. Merle Rosenzweig from the U-M Taubman Health Sciences Library has just released a new five-part video lecture that covers all aspects of complying with this policy:
Part 1 – About the Policy
Part 2 – Complying
Part 3 – Submitting to NIHMS
Part 4 – NIHPAP & the Grant Process
Part 5 – The Policy & eRA Commons
Slides for the lectures are also available (information at URL above). It takes about an hour to watch all five parts of the video.
Several other helpful resources as well as the video lecture are listed on the Office of Research & Sponsored Projects website.
More about the NIH Public Access Policy
The NIH public access policy requires that a PubMed Central identification number (PMCID) be added to the end of a journal citation in grant proposals, progress reports, and the NIH biosketch that may accompany these to show compliance for research that is supported by NIH grant funding.
Principal Investigators (PIs) and Program Directors (PDs) now must use My NCBI's online portal "My Bibliography" to manage their bibliographies. Citations must be added to My Bibliography to ensure that they appear in eRA Commons and thereby become associated with future annual progress reports. My Bibliography helps users address NIH Public Access compliance by assigning the appropriate NIH grant(s) with publications and expedites and facilitates their deposit into the National Institutes of Health Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS).
U-M Medical School faculty, staff, and students interested in the entrepreneurial side of life sciences research have a smorgasbord of upcoming events from which to choose. Celebrate Invention, the U-M Office of Technology Transfer’s annual showcase honoring campus inventors—many from the Medical School—is today (Thursday, October 18). U-M Medical School start-ups have been consistently recognized at the annual Accelerate Michigan business plan competition, this year taking place November 13-15 at the Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit. And from now until November 16, UMMS students have the opportunity to craft a “pitch” with the potential to solve problems in the health or technology sectors by participating in 1000 Pitches, hosted by the on-campus organization MPowered Entrepreneurship and sponsored by UMMS Business Development.

Christopher P. Austin, M.D.Tuesday, October 23, 2012
12:00 – 1:00 PM
Forum Hall, Palmer Commons
Christopher P. Austin, M.D., newly appointed director of the NIH's newest center, the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), will be presenting at the Center for the Discovery of New Medicine (CDNM) lecture series on October 23. Come listen as he shares his perspective on accelerating translational research.
The lecture is sponsored by the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR).
The Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) has introduced a new version of OpenClinica clinical trial management software. Mi-OC (University of Michigan OpenClinica) has the same features and functionality as the previously released edition, but allows researchers a "do-it-yourself" option.
MICHR began offering V-OC (Validated OpenClinica) in the fall of 2011 for clinical trial databases. This version is fully compliant with FDA regulations for studies that are intended to be used for FDA submissions and requires research teams to partner with MICHR experts to build and manage study databases. With the introduction of Mi-OC, researchers can now build and manage their clinical study databases themselves, after receiving free training from MICHR.
“OpenClinica’s electronic data capture and clinical data management system is now within easier reach of investigators with Mi-OC,” said Mary Phelps, Associate Managing Director, MICHR. ”It is free, secure, and has robust features including discrepancy management, source data verification, and reusability of study report forms.”
MICHR also continues to offer REDCap – the easy-to-use, no-cost, secure, HIPAA-compliant, web-based application – for simple, do-it-yourself data capture and data management, and recommends Mi-OC for studies requiring more complex databases that require data management functionality. MICHR recommends V-OC for more complex studies requiring compliance with federal regulations.
For more information on OpenClinica and other clinical research enabling solutions, contact MICHR at 734-998-7474 or um-michr@umich.edu to schedule a consultation.

The Medical School Office of Research has created a new collaborative group for those individuals who help the faculty write or edit biomedical grant proposals. The purpose of the group is to share insights, discussion, news, and resources about grant proposal development. The focus is on (1) pre-award activities related to preparing/writing the project description portion of grant proposals or (2) T32 (training) grant proposals.
A CTools site has been created for the group, and we’ve populated it with many resources. If you contribute to proposal content (e.g., aims, strategy, resources), please consider joining this network – simply complete this online form.
Contact Chris Black with any questions.

SHARPENING THE FOCUS:
Tips on Grant Proposal Preparation
By Chris Black, M.L.S., Assistant Director for Research Services, Office of Research
(This is one in a series of tips published in UMMS Research News about writing proposals.)
Good preliminary data can be used to improve reviewer confidence in both the credibility of the investigator and the feasibility of research. Data that support the PI’s hypothesis are especially important, and demonstrate that the team has already begun to “fill the gap in knowledge” that is so significant. (Remember: don’t irritate the reviewers with irrelevant data just to show you have experience conducting studies.)
While the data need to be substantial, they cannot be so substantial that the reviewer asks why the research needs to be funded, i.e., you already have your answer! Here is a simple formula that looks at preliminary results and statistical power:
- Positive results with high power = why are you applying?
- Negative results with high power = does not sound promising!
- Positive results with low power = let’s learn more!
In other words, have good enough results and enough power to show that this is a good scientific bet, but needs to be better substantiated.

Internal Submissions
Internal Deadline: November 1, 2012
The A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute’s Consortium for Stem Cell Therapies (CSCT) seek proposals for innovative research at the University of Michigan that utilize either human embryonic stem cell (hESC) lines or human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) lines derived by the CSCT. These grants are made possible from the generous contribution of Robert and Marge Alpern to a capital Fund for Stem Cell Research.
Two grants of $15,000 each will be available to support the transfer, directed differentiation, and phenotypic analysis of existing CSCT-produced disease-specific hESC lines. These lines are unique in that several represent the only existing line(s) for specific single-gene defects available worldwide. These funds can also support basic training, if needed, in pluripotent stem cell maintenance, growth, and characterization. A list of CSCT-derived hESC lines can be found online.
Two grants of $50,000 each will be available for the derivation of new lines (either hESC or hiPSC). Successful projects might include, but are not limited to:
- Derivation of a disease-specific hESC line. Funds will support acquisition of disease tested and affected human embryos under an IRB-approved study. Funds will support the production, expansion, and characterization of the disease-specific hESC line with submission and acceptance on the NIH hESC registry.
- Derivation of novel disease-specific hiPSC lines. Funds will support the derivation of fibroblast cell lines from a tissue biopsy (or cell bank), derivation, and characterization of at least four iPSC lines.
Applications should include a two-page research proposal (not including references), along with a brief budget summary (no PI salary support) and an NIH-format biosketch. They must be submitted electronically by November 1, 2012 through this website.
Proposals will be judged for scientific merit by the CSCT Scientific Advisory Board. Successful applicants will be notified by December 1, 2012 with funds available January 1, 2013.
