William L. Smith – Distinguished Faculty Lectureship Award Ceremony and Lecture
William L. Smith, Ph.D.William L. Smith, Ph.D.

“Essential Fatty Acids, Aspirin, Fish Oil and Cyclooxygenases”
Wednesday, October 10, 2012
3:30 - 4:30 PM
Dan and Betty Kahn Auditorium, Taubman Biomedical Science Research Building (BSRB)
A reception will follow the lecture in the Taubman BSRB Seminar Rooms A-B-C.

The Biomedical Research Council (BMRC) and the Medical School Office of Research are pleased to honor William L. Smith, Ph.D., the Minor J. Coon Professor and Chair of the Department of Biological Chemistry, as the 2012 recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Lectureship Award in Biomedical Research. This award, initiated in 1979, continues to be the highest honor bestowed by the Medical School upon a faculty member for research in the biomedical sciences. Dr. Smith is being recognized for his numerous research accomplishments, his valuable leadership to science and the university, and his extensive contributions in mentoring students and faculty.

Dr. Smith is highly respected in the national and international biochemical and pharmacological communities for his consistently leading research contributions. His laboratory covers research on nutritionally essential fatty acids, prostaglandins, cyclooxygenases in thrombosis and colon cancer, and cyclooxygenase biochemistry including modulation by aspirin, ibuprofen, coxibs and fish oil. Dr. Smith is known for our understanding of the chemical processes underlying the biosynthesis and functions of prostaglandins. He purified, sequenced and cloned a cyclooxygenase enzyme (COX-1). This enzyme converts specific dietary long-chain fatty acids to prostaglandins, multifunctional hormone-like regional chemical messengers that mediate a number of bodily functions, including inflammation, blood clotting, and smooth muscle actions. Dr. Smith demonstrated that aspirin blocks the enzyme and identified the precise molecular site that aspirin acetylates, and thereby blocks the action of the enzyme. This prompted much effort and success in pharmaceutical development for new non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs with longer action than aspirin and fewer side affects. Other work continues on prostaglandin functions related to increased consumption of fish oil that may be useful in preventing colon cancer. The laboratory is collaborating with clinical investigators in the UM Cancer Center in addressing this topic. Additional studies cover defining how COX-1 and COX-2 function including how catalysis is modulated by interactions with NSAIDs, COX-2 inhibitors such as Celebrex and fish oil fatty acids. More recent discoveries about COXs are also important clinically because they suggest that aspirin will not provide cardiovascular protection to patients taking COX-2 inhibitors like Celebrex.

New Joint Biomedical Engineering Department Officially Launched

As of September 1, 2012, the Department of Biomedical Engineering has transitioned from being part of the College of Engineering to being a joint department of Engineering and the Medical School. The Board of Regents voted to approve the new structure at its July meeting, following votes by the faculty of both schools in favor of the change.  This new format recognizes the already close relationship between the medical and engineering disciplines to make biomedical engineering research and teaching successful, and to spur the development of new health care technologies.

Nearly 35 Medical School faculty members already hold joint appointments in Biomedical Engineering, which is known as BME for short. There are nearly 50 faculty who have held either primary or secondary BME appointments through Engineering, and they will continue to do so.  More than 200 graduate students are currently working toward BME degrees – many of them through work in Medical School laboratories.  More than 200 undergraduates are pursuing bachelor’s degrees in the field.

BME now takes its place as one of nine basic science departments in the Medical School, and one of 29 departments over all – as well as being one of 11 departments in Engineering.

Important note: The joint BME department is not to be confused with the Biomedical Engineering section of the Facilities Services section of the Hospitals and Health Centers. That group provides support for patient medical equipment and technology across the clinical environment.

For more on the new joint department, please see the announcement that was issued when the Regents approved its creation.

David Ginsburg to Receive 2012 Stratton Medal from the American Society of Hematology
David Ginsburg, M.D.David Ginsburg, M.D.

The American Society of Hematology (ASH) will recognize David Ginsburg, M.D., with the 2012 Henry M. Stratton Medal for his accomplishments in the fields of thrombosis and blood cell immunology.  The Stratton Medal is named after the late Henry Maurice Stratton, co-founder of Grune and Stratton, the medical publishing house that first published ASH’s journal Blood. The prize honors senior investigators whose contributions to hematology are well-recognized and have taken place over a period of several years.

This year, for the first time, the Stratton Medal will be awarded to two individuals, one in basic research and the other in clinical/translational research. Ginsburg will receive the 2012 Stratton Medal for Basic Research for his many seminal scientific contributions in characterizing the molecular and genetic basis of inherited bleeding and clotting disorders. Dr. Richard H. Aster, M.D., of the Blood Center of Wisconsin and Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee will receive the 2012 Stratton Medal for Clinical/Translational Research.

Ginsburg is the James V. Neel Distinguished University Professor of Internal Medicine, Human Genetics, and Pediatrics at the U-M Medical School, a member of the U-M Life Sciences Institute, and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.  He has dedicated his medical career to understanding the clotting system and has made many contributions to the field of hematology, including identifying the genetic basis of numerous clotting disorders, such as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), combined deficiency of Factor V and Factor VIII, and von Willebrand disease (VWD). Beginning with the cDNA cloning of VWF in 1985, Dr. Ginsburg and his colleagues demonstrated how different mutations in the VWF gene resulted in the variable subtypes of VWD, a focus which also led to his group’s identification and cloning of the ADAMTS13 gene as the cause of TTP.

A member of ASH since 1985, Dr. Ginsburg has served in numerous roles within the Society, including serving as Chair of the Committee on Scientific Affairs, Councillor on the Executive Committee, and a member of the Scientific Subcommittee on Hemostasis (now the Scientific Committee on Hemostasis) and the Scientific Committee on Thrombosis and Vascular Biology.

The quality and impact of Dr. Ginsburg’s research have been recognized by numerous prestigious honors and awards. In addition to receiving ASH’s 2000 E. Donnall Thomas Lecture and Prize, Dr. Ginsburg is an inductee of the Institute of Medicine and National Academy of Sciences and has been honored with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Merit Award, the American Heart Association Distinguished Scientists Award, and the American Society for Clinical Investigators ASCI/ Stanley J. Korsmeyer Award. Dr. Ginsburg’s scientific contributions are only a part of his overall impact on the field of hematology. Another important facet of his contributions is evidenced by the numerous scientists and clinicians that he has mentored over the years, many of whom have made remarkable discoveries in hematology.

“Drs. Ginsburg and Aster have made remarkable advances in hematology and the Society is honored to award them with the Stratton Medal for their contributions to the field,” said ASH President Armand Keating, MD, of Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. “Their achievements have advanced our understanding of how genes play an important role in inherited disease and have led to safer blood transfusions that have saved countless lives around the world.”

“David Ginsburg’s work as a hematologist and geneticist will have a lasting influence on the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders, and on the influence of genetics on modern medicine,” says Alan Saltiel, director of the Life Science Institute. “This award affirms his many significant contributions to his field and his leadership in the scientific community.”

Ginsburg and Aster will accept their awards at 9:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 during the 54th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition in Atlanta.

ULAM Delivery Notification

Labs with active “standing orders” with ULAM will be contacted regarding the workflow changes.  Also, with this eRAM conversion, there will be no form history accessible by labs, so any old animal management forms and records will need to be maintained according to their department’s requirements.

Shortcode Management
The Shortcode Manager designation will be a Principal Investigator-ONLY function within eRAM under the “Manage Short Codes Tab/Update Details.”  Here you can change your shortcode managers.  Directions can be found online.

Step-by-step directions and quick reference guides for the second phase of eRAM are posted online. All system screens will have help text and links to pertinent information for you to reference.

Anyone using the current eRAM system will not need additional login access.  We are simply adding the new functionality to the existing system.

Please contact the ULAM Office (734-764-0277 or Ulam-e-RAM@med.umich.edu) or the UCUCA Office (734-763-8028 or UCUCA-Office@med.umich.edu) with questions or concerns.

SHARPENING THE FOCUS:

Tips on Grant Proposal Preparation

Timing is Everything

By Chris Black, M.L.S., Assistant Director for Research Services, Office of Research

(This is one in a series of tips published in UMMS Research News about writing proposals.)

Here are some guidelines regarding the timing of a new R01 to NIH:

  • Preparation and peer review: allow 6 months (e.g., 4 mo. planning/writing, 1 mo. review, 1 mo. fixing/editing; 2 weeks submission process)
  • Internal deadlines:
    • UMMS Grants & Analysis Office: proposal due 7 business days prior to sponsor deadline
    • Central administration: proposal at ORSP 4 business days prior to sponsor's deadline
  • After submission to NIH (approximate durations):
    • Study section review will occur 4 to 5 months after submission.
    • Score will be posted in NIH Commons approx. 1 month later; summary statement will be posted approximately 30 days later; call Program Officer to discuss.
    • If your score is within the payline, immediately prepare your Just-In-Time information, e.g., Other support, certification of IRB approval. Have ready to submit when/if NIH grants management contacts you.
    • Council will review results 2 months after study section for funding decisions.
    • Funding if awarded: 8 weeks* (assuming no barriers, e.g., animal usage).

* NIH awards have been taking longer than usual to finalize.
** Applying in Cycles 1 and 2 (February & June) may increase delays because funding decisions made by the Council are at the beginning of the Fiscal Year. At this time, the Institute’s budget may not yet been determined, and administrators are being conservative with spending. Funding decisions at the end of a FY are more timely.

Here are some guidelines regarding timing and funding strategy of a renewal R01 to NIH:

  • Plan on 19 months from submission to award.
  • To stay funded,
    • plan on multiple proposals (to NIH and others) throughout the 5 years of your award.
    • submit new and renewal awards at different times.
    • remember: your goal is to avoid a break in funding.
    • read related article: It’s Never Too Soon to Think About Renewing.
  • The Study Section review will occur approximately 3-4 months after submission.

Remember: Time and tide tarry for no man (John Clarke, 17th century)

“Informed Choice and the Construction of Preferences” Presented by Ellen Peters, Ph.D.

September 20, 2012
3:00 - 4:30 PM
4448 East Hall (Main Campus, corner of S. University Ave & Church Street)

Ellen Peters, Ph.D., will present this Center for Bioethics and Social Science in Medicine (CBSSM) seminar in conjunction with the Decision Consortium.  Dr. Ellen Peters is Associate Professor of Psychology at Ohio State University and studies decision making as an interaction of characteristics of the decision situation and characteristics of the individual. She focuses on how affective, intuitive, and deliberative processes help people to make decisions in an increasingly complex world. She has three major strands of research. First, her research interests in decision making include number processing and the study of individual differences in numeracy and an intuitive sense of numbers. A second central strand of research concerns how affect and emotion influence information processing and decisions. Third, she is interested in how information processing and decision making change in complex ways across the adult life span. She is also generally interested in issues of risk perception and risk communication in health, financial, and environmental contexts, including how to present information to facilitate its comprehension and use.
