Genomics Event at NCRC on June 6 Featuring Brian Athey and Eric Schadt

Wednesday, June 6, 2012
5:00 - 7:00 PM
NCRC Building 18 Dining Hall

Two thought leaders in open source models of innovation will discuss the hope of unprecedented future biomedical discoveries in the fast-changing field of genomics.  On June 6, UMMS Business Development and BioArbor welcome guest speaker Eric Schadt, Ph.D., co-founder of Sage Bionetworks, Director of the Institute for Genomics and Multiscale Biology, and Chair of the Department of Genetics and Genomics Sciences at Mt. Sinai Medical School. Dr. Schadt will be joined on stage in a provocative conversation with Brian Athey, Ph.D., Chair of U-M’s new Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics and chairman of tranSMART.

Dr. Schadt and Dr. Athey will examine the challenges that result when the pace of innovation can’t keep up with the ability to aggregate and analyze exponentially increasing data sets. They’ll also discuss the increasing call for novel partnerships and open source models of innovation, where both private and public sectors collaborate and early stage discoveries benefit from shared knowledge and incubate in a pre-competitive space.  Join the conversation as these renowned experts weigh the possibilities of the next “big idea,” and whether it’s possible to navigate across various interests and collaborate effectively, sharing the risks and rewards for the betterment of humankind.

Free event but pre-registration is required at

Data Harmonization Tool Includes New Measures for Use by Substance Abuse Researchers

Substance abuse researchers can now benefit from a resource that allows scientists to gather, share and compare human-subjects data. The Consensus Measures for Phenotype and eXposures (PhenX) Toolkit, which now contains 43 additional substance abuse and addiction measures, will increase the ability of scientists to combine data and work together across studies, promoting the identification of gene-gene or gene-environment interactions related to substance abuse and addiction.

On February 24, 2012, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) issued a Notice to the NIH Guide encouraging its grantees to incorporate the PhenX measures, which were chosen by working groups of expert scientists and vetted through community outreach prior to their inclusion. By encouraging the use of this toolkit, NIDA hopes to promote collaboration among researchers from around the world to enhance scientific knowledge in the field of substance abuse and addiction.

Click here for more information on the PhenX Toolkit, which is led by RTI International with funding from NHGRI.

SHARPENING THE FOCUS:

Tips on Grant Proposal Preparation

Stay Out of the Hazards! What Do NIH and Golf Have in Common?

By Chris Black, M.L.S., Assistant Director for Research Services, Office of Research

(This is one in a series of tips published in UMMS Research News about writing proposals.)

I have often wondered why NIH chooses to use a grant scoring system that is the reverse of the traditional 0 – 100 scale. At NIH, the closer the Impact score is to the perfect 10 (on a scale from 10 – 90), the more likely it is to get funded. Being a fan of the game of golf, I often think of it as an analogy to NIH grant competitions – the lowest score wins. The analogy makes sense when one realizes that to attain a low score, the golfer and the researcher have to be clear about the objective (get the ball in the hole! test the hypothesis!) and have the skills and experience to meet that objective most efficiently (keep the strokes – or mistakes – down!).

The golfer’s best odds of winning are when he or she is playing on a team of skilled players who have varied strengths – someone may be able to drive particularly well, while someone else is a great putter. Likewise, the successful investigator is likely to be on an interdisciplinary team, where players not only have varied expertise to get the work accomplished, but someone also will know how to salvage the effort if the study goes off course (e.g., let’s hope someone on the team can hit the ball out of the sand). Sometimes the champion is not the person who stays out of trouble, but the person who is the most creative in visioning an alternate route.

Wouldn’t it be nice if NIH had a golf handicapping system, which equalizes the score between the best and worst players? Think of it - no matter how poorly you consistently performed in the past, you would get credit on your score to make up for your shortcomings. No such luck in the competitive NIH review process – like in professional golf, the competitor gets into a tournament based on great performances in the past. However, on the amateur level (e.g., pre-NIH funding), the young or inexperienced investigator is often given extra consideration in either the funding opportunity or funding review process; for example, there are many fellowships and foundation grants restricted to grooming the next generation of investigators (the pre-professionals). But if the investigator attempts to compete with the best in the field in the country, he or she foregoes a handicap!

The game of competitive golf requires skill, practice, patience, passion, perseverance, and a bit of luck. Does this sound like any NIH investigators you might know?

Brain Research Foundation Scientific Innovations Award
Internal Deadline: May 17, 2012

The Brain Research Foundation’s Scientific Innovations Award (SIA) provides funding for innovative science in both basic and clinical neuroscience. This funding mechanism is designed to support creative, exploratory, cutting edge research in well-established research laboratories, under the direction of established investigators. The objective of the SIA is to support projects that may be too innovative and speculative for traditional funding sources but still have a high likelihood of producing important findings. It is expected that investigations supported by these grants will yield high impact findings and result in major grant applications and significant publications in high impact journals.

Each award is limited to $150,000 (direct costs) for a two year grant period. The support focus is for new research projects of the highest scientific merit.

To be eligible, the nominee must be a tenured/tenure-track professor or associate professor working in the area of studies of brain function in health and disease. Current major NIH or other peer-reviewed funding is preferred but evidence of such funding in the past three years is essential. Studies should be related to either normal human brain development or specifically identified disease states. This includes molecular and clinical neuroscience as well as studies of neural, sensory, motor, cognitive, behavioral and emotional functioning in health and disease. The grant proposal must detail a new research project that is not funded by other sources. This should be a unique project for senior investigators who are encouraged to stretch their imagination into areas that can substantially change an area of research.

UM may nominate one senior faculty member. Deadline for the letter of intent to the Foundation is July 2, 2012 (4:00 PM CST).

NOTE: Not all eligibility criteria may be listed in this abstract. Before submitting an application for this internal competition, it is the applicant’s responsibility to visit the foundation website and verify that both the applicant and their project meet ALL eligibility criteria.

For consideration as an institutional nominee, submit the items below electronically by May 17, 2012 following the instructions listed on the cover sheetDownload the cover sheet.

  • Cover sheet
  • Nominating letter from the department chair
  • 2-page project summary (must be no more than 2 pages and include hypothesis, approach, and timeline for completion)
  • NIH formatted biosketch

We acknowledge receipt of all electronic submissions. If you do not receive a response from us by the end of the next business day, please call us at 734-763-4086. Contact Kathryn Ridner at 734-763-4086 or (kridner@umich.edu) with any questions.

W. M. Keck Foundation - Programs in Medicine and Science & Engineering - Call for Concept Papers
Internal Deadline: June 8, 2012

Award Amount:  up to $1,000,000 over two to three years.

The W.M. Keck Foundation seeks high-risk/high reward projects focused on the development of pioneering instrumentation, new technologies and novel methodologies that advance and facilitate research (not medical treatment). The Foundation is particularly interested in funding basic fundamental research based on innovative ideas that lie outside the reach of traditional funding sources and encourages applications that put young investigators in positions of leadership.

The University of Michigan is invited to submit concept papers for consideration to the W. M. Keck Foundation. From these concept papers the University is allowed to submit one Phase I proposal per funding cycle per program. Applications must be coordinated with the U-M Foundation Relations office.

Concept Paper Guidelines

Prepare a one-page concept paper that includes

  • A summary statement in clear terms describing the problem you are trying to solve, how current barriers will be overcome, and a clear vision of what will be gained. Summary should: focus on what is high reward, compare work to existing strategies and teams, and be specific about what currently exists, what is new, and what the proposed work will achieve.
  • Provide a statement on why the W.M. Keck Foundation is essential to the project’s success. Be able to explain explicitly what puts your concept outside the range of federal sponsors. If you have attempted to get federal funding for the proposed idea, please include reviews to show the idea is considered too risky.
  • Provide names of research team and current successful collaboration undertaken (the collaborative team can be formed with non-UM faculty).

Submit all internal applications electronically to:
keck-concept@umich.edu

Internal proposals will be evaluated based on the impact and strength of the proposed research and how well the proposal meets the W.M. Keck Foundation’s stated criteria.

Competitive Phase I Proposals:

  • Explain clearly the overarching goal of the project, articulating both the approach (what) and methodology (how) that will be used.
  • Focus on emerging areas of research.
  • Envision the future state their work would enable.
  • Have the potential to develop breakthrough technologies, instrumentation or methodologies.
  • Are innovative, distinctive and interdisciplinary.
  • Demonstrate a high level of risk due to unconventional approaches, or by challenging the prevailing paradigm.
  • Have the potential for transformative impact, such as founding a new field of research, impacting multiple fields simultaneously, enabling observations not previously possible or the altering the perception of a previously intractable problem.
  • Bring together a complimentary team of researchers from unique disciplines.

Your proposal will not be competitive if it focuses on medical applications, devices and next-iterative step work or is focused on individual work in a single discipline.

Please contact Ann Verhey-Henke (averhey@umich.edu or 734-647-0282) with questions regarding this competition.
