Attend a Training Session – Streamlined Process for Clinical Trial Contracts! (January 16, 17, and 18)

We invite you to a training session to learn about the Medical School pilot to facilitate industry-sponsored clinical trial agreements. This pilot was developed in collaboration with study teams and the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) – formerly called the Division of Research Development and Administration (DRDA).  The topics that will be covered in the training session include:

Training on the newly enhanced eResearch Proposal Management (eRPM) system* to learn how to:

  • Submit Non-Disclosure Agreements in eRPM.
  • Use the Medical School Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) Template:  if a sponsor agrees to the standard terms, the School can sign the NDA instead of ORSP having to negotiate an NDA.
  • Get a draft clinical trial agreement to ORSP to start negotiations early using the new Clinical Trial Routing Form (pre-PAF).
  • Notify the MICHR Clinical Trial Office to learn how they can assist you with pre-award support at no charge to study teams.

*Live demonstration of eRPM enhancements will occur during the training session.

Meeting the two new ORSP project representatives dedicated to non-federal clinical trials.

Michigan Budget Enrollment Calendar Tool (MBECT) – Updates, Enrollment, and Training

MBECT Updates

A new enhancement has been added to MBECT to manage studies that have cycles as part of the study protocol.  This new enhancement allows the same billing calendar construction as you would have built in Excel.  Also provided is the ability to capture multiple occurrences of an item/service at a specific visit.

This update also includes the “cycle set up” screen in the wizard.  If you do not use cycles as part of protocol workflow, you are able to skip this screen and go to “visit set up” by clicking the “next” button.  Please contact the MBECT help desk at (MBECT-help@umich.edu) or 734-764-5669 (KNOW) for more information.

Enrollment

Enrollment in MBECT is mandatory for all departments at UMHS that are required to create and submit a billing calendar. Please follow the Clinical Research Billing Policy for further information on enrollment requirements. Direct your questions to (CR2-ao@umich.edu) or call 734-998-6880.

MBECT’s definition of enrollment: A subject’s information must  be added to MBECT once the informed consent form has been signed, and there is the expectation that items/services will take place and will be billed to the subject’s health plan, study account, or the subject.

Training

You can locate and register for MBECT, Billing Calendar, and Enrollment training sessions at this website.

SHARPENING THE FOCUS:

Tips on Grant Proposal Preparation

The NIH Specific Aims Quiz

By Christine Black, Assistant Director for Research Services, Office of Research

This is one in a series of articles published in UMMS Research News about writing proposals.

(see answers below)

  1. What is the most common number of aims in an NIH grant application?
    1. 1
    2. 2
    3. 3
  1. True or False? If you have more than one hypothesis, it is preferable that you state specific aims for each one.
  1. Three most important characteristics of good specific aims are that they are:
    1. Creative, pioneering, ambitious
    2. Measurable, realistic, specific
    3. Descriptive, risky, process-oriented
  1. True or False? There is no room on the Specific Aims page for a long-term goal; that is included in the Approach section.
  1. True or False? When developing your aims, it is a good idea to think ahead to estimated costs.
  1. True or False? Before a new investigator completes the entire draft of a proposal, it is a good idea to stop and get feedback from experienced peers about this blueprint of the project.
  1. The Aims should relate to:
    1. Preliminary data
    2. Long term goals
    3. Your hypothesis/es
    4. All of the above

Answers: 1. C; 2. True; 3. B; 4. False; 5. True; 6. True; 7. D

UM Research Partnership Program
Deadline: February 16, 2012

The Research Partnership Program includes the following funding opportunities available to faculty and graduate students. Be sure to review the materials and websites carefully to note the different purposes of the two awards and apply to the most appropriate program.

  • The Spring/Summer Research Grants Program will award grants to faculty members who plan to work with doctoral students on scholarly projects during the spring and summer terms. Please note that the award has changed this year from past years. This year, the grants will provide funding for a doctoral student with a 0.50 GSRA appointment for the spring/summer full term or one of the half terms. The grants are intended to support faculty scholarship while also providing financial support opportunities for professional and intellectual development for participating students. Preference is given to faculty members who include a thoughtful plan for student mentoring in their applications, and who do not have other funding available to support a GSRA to carry out the proposed work. Faculty members who have received a Spring/Summer Research Grant in the past two years will not be eligible in the current year. View application materials and additional information.
  • The Distinguished Faculty and Graduate Student Seminars Program will provide a maximum of five awards to groups of faculty, students or graduate programs proposing innovative seminars and colloquia to foster collaboration and stimulate new research. Awards will range from $5,000 to $10,000 and may be used to complement funds from department, college or external sponsors. All instructional and research faculty and librarians affiliated with a Rackham doctoral program are eligible to apply. View additional information.
