Animal Research

Animal Numbers Matter

Choosing an appropriate number of animals is an important part of any research project.  A proper sample size is essential in order to obtain statistically valid results.  To this end, one important goal of the University Committee on Use and Care of Animals’ (UCUCA) review of animal use protocols is to ensure that a sufficient but not excessive number of animals are being proposed.  As animals are used they are deducted from the authorized number on the protocol.  Another central responsibility of the UCUCA is to ensure that investigators do not procure, breed, or use animals in excess of the number approved on the animal use protocol.  Needless to say, all animal numbers are estimations and things can and do change.  Procedures fail, unexpected events occur, and new research directions emerge.  With the eRAM system, it is always possible to amend a protocol to deal with such eventualities or with data that are more variable than had been anticipated, thus requiring additional animals per group.

Remember, all animals manipulated or born under a protocol are considered used.  Manipulation, for UCUCA’s purpose, includes, but is not limited to: breeding, anesthetization, restraint (e.g., placement in stanchion), food and/or water restriction, administration of substances, and behavioral testing.  Even if an animal does not undergo all activities described on the protocol (e.g., undergoes anesthesia but does not undergo experimental surgery due to a discovered illness), any level of manipulation requires that animal be deducted from the total number of animals authorized for use on the protocol.  The eRAM system allows investigators and their lab managers to review their animal numbers easily by navigating to your protocol workspace.  Assuring that your animal numbers do not go negative is an important responsibility and can only be achieved as a partnership between the UCUCA and investigators.  Over the next several months, we will be working hard to improve communication regarding animal number balances and make tracking your animal numbers easier.

If you have any questions about your animal numbers or any other areas of animal research compliance, feel free to contact the UCUCA Office directly at 734-763-8028 or (ucuca.office@umich.edu).

SHARPENING THE FOCUS:

Tips on Grant Proposal Preparation

The Proposal Title – Lure in the Reader

By Christine Black, Assistant Director for Research Services, Office of Research

(This is one in a series of tips published in UMMS Research News about writing proposals.)

Think of fishing for that elusive big catch – what strategies would you use as bait for the reader?

The title should:

  • Match interests of reviewers and use appropriate key words.
    • title is one element evaluated by NIH-CSR to assign application to study section
  • Be specific, indicating the goal/product/payoff of  project.
    • no generic terms, e.g., “project”
    • no sweeping goals or processes, e.g., “study of mixed function oxygenases”
  • Reflect the research problem and, possibly, approach to studying it.
    • relates to Aims and Significance
    • conveys novelty
  • Use simple language; the more technical or discipline-specific the funding source, the more technical with acronyms your title can be.
    • e.g., okay to use DNA as widely understood term, maybe  not CYP286.4
    • most titles need to be understood by lay persons
  • Be memorable, but not funny or flippant.

See some good samples:

  • “Mechanism of reduced heart failure pathogenesis with phytochemical intake” from UMMS Grant Proposal Sampler
(This site is password-protected with access restricted to Medical School faculty, staff, and postdoctoral fellows.)
  • "Structural controls of functional receptor and antibody binding to viral capsids" from  NIAID.

Call for Concept Papers – W. M. Keck Foundation – Programs in Medicine and Science & Engineering
Internal Deadline: January 9, 2012

Award Amount: up to $1,000,000 over two to three years.

The W.M. Keck Foundation seeks high-risk/high reward projects focused on the development of pioneering instrumentation, new technologies and novel methodologies that advance and facilitate research. The Foundation is particularly interested in funding innovative ideas that lie outside the reach of traditional funding sources and encourages applications that put young investigators in positions of leadership.

The  W.M. Keck Foundation has two programs, one in Medicine and one in Science and Engineering. The University of Michigan is invited to submit concept papers to the Foundation for consideration. From these concept papers the University is allowed to submit one Phase I proposal per funding cycle per program. Applications must be coordinated with the U-M Foundation Relations office.

Concept Paper Guidelines

Prepare a one-page concept paper that includes

  • A summary statement in clear terms describing the problem you are trying to solve, how current barriers will be overcome, and a clear vision of what will be gained. Summary should focus on what is high reward, compare work to existing strategies and teams, and be specific about what currently exists, what is new, and what the proposed work will achieve.
  • Provide a statement on why the W.M. Keck Foundation is essential to the project’s success. Be able to explain explicitly what puts your concept outside the range of federal sponsors. If you have attempted to get federal funding for the proposed idea, please include reviews to show the idea is considered too risky.
  • Provide names of research team and current successful collaboration undertaken.

Submit all internal applications electronically to (keck-concept@umich.edu).

Internal proposals will be evaluated based on the impact and strength of the proposed research and how well the proposal meets the W.M. Keck Foundation’s stated criteria.

Competitive Phase I Proposals:

  • Explain clearly the overarching goal of the project, articulating both the approach and methodology that will be used.
  • Focus on important and emerging areas of research.
  • Have the potential to develop breakthrough technologies, instrumentation or methodologies.
  • Are innovative, distinctive and interdisciplinary.
  • Demonstrate a high level of risk due to unconventional approaches, or by challenging the prevailing paradigm.
  • Have the potential for transformative impact, such as the founding of a new field of research, the enabling of observations not previously possible or the altered perception of a previously intractable problem.

Please contact Ann Verhey-Henke (averhey@umich.edu or 734-647-0282) with questions regarding this competition.

Dana Foundation Program in Brain and Immuno-Imaging
Internal Deadline: January 12, 2012

The Dana Foundation Program in Brain and Immuno-Imaging focuses on improving human brain and brain-immune functioning in health and disease. Funds support pilot-testing of promising but high-risk innovative ideas that have direct clinical application and that, when successful, are competitive for larger-scale support from other funders. Scientists may use either structural/physiological brain imaging techniques, cellular and molecular imaging technologies, or a combination of both. Submitted proposals should focus on imaging in patients or patient tissues, and healthy volunteers.

This program focuses on providing support to faculty researchers who have demonstrated the potential for independent research careers who are at the assistant professor level, or in the first few years of their associate professor appointments. Promising early career investigators who have not yet been awarded more than one independent research grant (R01 from the NIH or equivalent from another Federal agency) are eligible to apply for funding of up to $200,000 payable over three years. Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible to apply. Applications from junior investigators that are an extension of the work of a senior mentor, particularly if from the same institution, are discouraged. Projects involving collaborations with NIH intramural researchers or industry scientists are acceptable.

NOTE: Not all eligibility criteria may be listed in this abstract. Before submitting an application for this internal competition, it is the applicant’s responsibility to visit the foundation website and verify that BOTH the applicant AND their project meet ALL eligibility criteria.

Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation Grants
Internal Deadline: January 19, 2012

The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) is dedicated to conducting basic and translational cancer research with the intent of developing new therapies or preventive strategies for cancer through the understanding of mechanisms of disease development. Through collaborative grants, the sharing of information, reagents, technologies and ideas, and the organization of international conferences, SWCRF has created an “Institute Without Walls” with scientific programs spanning multiple institutions and disciplines.

SWCRF seeks to fund investigators interested in differentiation therapy of cancer -- the notion that the cancer cell can be re-programmed to re-acquire aspects of normal cell differentiation including terminal cell division and programmed cell death. Priority will be given to:

  • Proposals addressing promising new areas of study for the applicant, not yet funded by the National Institutes of Health or other major granting agencies.
  • Basic studies that will directly impact the understanding of the abnormal program of the cancer cell.
  • Translational studies with patient specimens; correlative studies of clinical trials.

An initial, two-year grant will consist of up to $100,000 per year of direct cost (no indirects). Upon completion of two years of funding, review of progress and approval by the grants review committee, a third year of funding may be considered. The SWCRF project should not overlap with other sources of support.

Applicants must be established investigators with a tenure-track or tenured appointment holding as Principal Investigator at least one grant from a major funding source such as the NIH, NSF, DOD, ACS.  The applicant may hold a K08 grant, a K99/R00 grant or another major career transition grant, such as those from the Burroughs Welcome Foundation or Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Equal consideration will be given to junior and senior investigators.

NOTE: Not all eligibility criteria may be listed in this abstract. Before submitting an application for this internal competition, it is the applicant’s responsibility to review the RFA and verify that BOTH the applicant AND their project meet ALL eligibility criteria.

David and Lucile Packard Foundation Fellowships for Science and Engineering
Internal Deadline: February 10, 2012

In past years, the University of Michigan has been invited to nominate two faculty members for the Packard Foundation’s Fellowships for Science and Engineering.  We anticipate an invitation again for the 2012 competition.

“The intent of the Fellowship Program is to provide support for unusually creative researchers early in their careers” and “to emphasize support for innovative individual research that involves the Fellows, their students, and junior colleagues, rather than extensions or components of large-scale, ongoing research programs.”

Eligible candidates:  Faculty members engaged in research in the natural and physical sciences or engineering.  Candidates must be faculty members in the first three years of their faculty career, that is, whose initial faculty appointments began no earlier than May 31, 2009, and no later than May 31, 2012.

Eligible disciplines:  Physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, computer science, earth science, ocean science, and all branches of engineering. Candidates engaged in research in the social sciences will not be considered.

Award Amount: $875,000 distributed over five years.

NOTE: Not all eligibility criteria may be listed in this abstract.  Before submitting an application for this internal competition, it is the applicant’s responsibility to visit the foundation website (listed below) and verify that both the applicant and their project meet ALL eligibility criteria.

For consideration as an institutional nominee, submit the following electronically in a single PDF document to (OVPRlimitedsubmissions@umich.edu) by February 10, 2012:

  • Nomination letter from the department chair.  This letter should explicitly address the impact that the Packard would have on the career of the nominee and the strength of external references.
  • A research statement responsive to the RFP, describing why the research is important and outlining the general goals for the next five years.  Please follow the Packard format.
  • NIH formatted biosketch.
  • Names, institutions, brief biographies, and relationship to candidate of three external references. At least one reference must have had no supervisory or collaborative contact with the nominee.  For each reference, please list employment history and award(s)/honor(s) received.  (For e.g., former Packard Fellow, member of National Academy, etc.)  In addition, please list letters this reference has previously written for the candidate (jobs, awards) and outcome.

Internal proposals will be evaluated based on the impact and strength of the proposed research; how well the proposal meets the Packard Foundation stated criteria; the qualifications of the named external references; and the strength of the nomination letter.

Competitive Proposals:

  • Explains clearly why the idea is out of the box, risky and innovative (i.e. the idea has breakthrough potential and is not next iterative step in your research plan).
  • Put the work and its significance in context of the larger field.
  • Are accessible to a group of very successful scientists from a diverse set of fields (i.e. stay away from field specific jargon).
  • Have high impact referees that can emphasize how a fellowship will make a significant impact on the nominee’s career and how it will make that difference for them.

Ann Verhey-Henke is also available to provide additional feedback.  She can be reached at 734-647-0282 or (averhey@umich.edu).

UM nominees will be notified promptly of their selection and must then prepare and submit complete applications (after routing through U-M’s eRPM) to the Packard Foundation mid-April 2012. The due date last year was 4/20/11. The exact date for this year is yet to be determined by the Foundation as of November 28, 2011.  Additional information and guidelines for preparation are posted on the Foundation website.

Please contact Lisa Turek (laturek@umich.edu or 734-763-1290) with questions regarding this fellowship program.

Further information on this and other current funding opportunities may be obtained on the DRDA website.
