Presenter: Christine K. Black, Assistant Director of Research Services, Medical School Office of Research
This workshop is an overview of developing grant proposals that are responsive to reviewers’ expectations. There will be emphasis on NIH proposals, but all sponsorship will be covered, e.g., foundations, public charities. Relevant resources at the Medical School and University will be integrated. During the last half-hour of the workshop, a panel will assemble to answer questions about various types of research and proposal mechanisms, protocol, grantsmanship, and sponsors. The panel members – who are celebrated mentors in addition to being experienced in proposals development – include:
- Dan Clauw, M.D., Professor of Anesthesiology and former PI (Director) of the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research (MICHR)
- Richard Miller, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Pathology and Research Professor, Institute of Gerontology
- Ann Verhey-Henke, Director, Foundation Relations for Health, Science and Technology
Please register to attend this free workshop.
This workshop is sponsored by the Medical School Office of Research. Please note a similar workshop on October 11, 2011 sponsored by DRDA and presented by Chris Black is now full (view details).

The MICHR Clinical Trials Office (MCTO) is now available to support faculty with the pre-award phase of industry-sponsored clinical trials.
Staffed with a multidisciplinary team, the MCTO provides assistance with completing the Proposal Approval Forms (PAF), conducting a recruitment feasibility assessment, drafting budgets and billing calendar, negotiating budget and consent language with sponsor, completing initial IRB application and consent/assent forms, and facilitate approval of contract.
For more information, contact Jill Malayang.
Roberta ProftMICHR is pleased to offer the Research Navigator, dedicated to helping researchers connect with the right resources in MICHR and beyond. The Research Navigator will assist clinical and translational research teams by helping them find their way through the MICHR research infrastructure, from start to finish.
Roberta Proft fills the role of the Research Navigator. She has more than 10 years of experience supporting study teams and managing research at the University of Michigan, including helping scientists at U-M, MSU, and WSU develop a statewide network of research core facilities. Before coming to U-M, she spent more than 20 years as a clinical laboratory technologist, manager, and consultant.
This recent request came to Roberta via the MICHR email address (um-michr@umich.edu): "I am new to the Clinical Coordinator world, and I was hoping to ask you a few questions. I will be responsible for all the translational research going on in our laboratory. This includes keeping all the research data secure and organized, helping on IRB paperwork, and the occasional participant interaction. I was wondering if you could help me figure out which training courses I would need to take?"
Roberta referred the question to MICHR's staff education specialist, Julie Harris, who worked with the study coordinator to identify the most appropriate training courses, including PEERS. This person was also referred to a new website – UMStudyCoordinators.org – exclusively for Study Coordinators, with training and other resources shaped by U-M's Research Coordinators Council in partnership with MICHR.
Researchers can contact the Navigator for help at 734-998-7474 or (proft@umich.edu).

RESEARCH COMPLIANCE TRAINING AND EDUCATION
Human Research
Changes were made to the format of the Informed Consent and Assent Template webpage and updated versions of the Consent and Assent Templates have been uploaded. The revised forms include easier to read Consent and Assent Completion Instructions as well as "clean" copies of the Consent and Assent Templates (without instructions). Additionally, as required by recent FDA mandate and U.S. law, information regarding the posting of the study information on clinicaltrials.gov has been added to the Informed Consent form. The Informed Consent and Assent documents can be found at (http://med.umich.edu/irbmed/ict.htm).
In preparation for the forthcoming NIH COI (Conflict of Interest) review requirements, and to comply with standards set by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protections Programs (AAHRPP), beginning August 29, 2011, ALL members of the study team, except administrative staff, are now required to accept their role on eResearch IRB applications and answer a set of short, general COI questions. Only those individuals who are identified as having a possible COI based on their responses to these questions will be contacted by the appropriate COI review committee to answer additional, more detailed questions. Information regarding these changes can be found online.
IRBMED is pleased to announce several staff changes: Pat Gordon, former JARA of the B2 Board, has accepted the eResearch Coordinator position. Jennifer Galland has been hired as the Expedited Staff Reviewer. Cecilia Brenner, former ARA of the B2 Board, has accepted the JARA position of the B2 Board.
Animal Research
It’s hard to believe that fall is here, since for many of us it seems that summer has just begun. But a new academic year is here, and there are changes to the faces around campus and in the labs. Please remember to submit a personnel amendment through eRAM to remove students that no longer work on your protocol(s) and to add new lab members. Remember, personnel changes should be completed in real time (i.e., when people join or leave a lab) and not on an annual basis (i.e., at the time of the annual renewal). In addition, all personnel listed on UCUCA protocols who are working with animals must complete all required training courses as soon as possible. For more training information, visit the ULAM Training Core.
The start of the semester also often means new investigators and new animal use applications. If you will be conducting animal research at U-M as a Principal Investigator, there is a great deal of information that you are responsible for knowing. We at the UCUCA Office are here to help you find your way through the maze! Check our website (http://www.ucuca.umich.edu) for the latest policy and procedure updates. If you have any questions regarding the UCUCA or anything related to your animal work or compliance, please do not hesitate to contact us at (ucuca.office@umich.edu) or 734-763-8028.
A new report from the National Research Council’s Institute for Laboratory Animal Research, Guidance for the Description of Animal Research in Scientific Publications, has just been released. It outlines the information that should be included in scientific papers regarding animal studies to ensure that the study can be replicated. The report urges journal editors to actively promote effective and ethical research by encouraging the provision of sufficient information. Examples of this information include: conditions of housing and husbandry, genetic nomenclature, microbial status, detailed experimental manipulations, and handling and use of pharmaceuticals. Inclusion of this information will enable assessment and interpretation of research findings and advancement of knowledge based on reproducible results.
SHARPENING THE FOCUS:
Tips on Grant Proposal Preparation
By Christine Black, Assistant Director for Research Services, Office of Research
Responding to Reviewers:
Does the Introduction to your resubmission reflect indifference, insincerity, or incredulity? If so, do not expect to get funded – even with good core criteria scores, the overall impact score will suffer. The Introduction is arguably the most important section of the resubmitted NIH proposal – it is the reader’s first impression about whether you responded seriously to the NIH Summary statement.
Suggestions:
- Acknowledge reviewers’ efforts and how the project will benefit as suggested.
- Organize by section as applicable, e.g., Specific Aims, Significance, Innovation, Approach, Investigators.
- Respond point by point to the reviewers' major comments (cover ALL in overall Resume of Summary statement). Feel free to paraphrase or condense original comments. Even if you disagree, be respectful.
- If you agree with the reviewers, change your proposal accordingly and refer to section in revised proposal.
- If you disagree, explain why (don’t be defensive or dismissive) or just provide additional rationale/information if possible. For example, if the critique states: “There is a lack of established collaboration between members of the research team.” Simply respond: “Research collaborations are now highlighted in Personal Statements of the Biosketches.”
- In the revised project description, typographically highlight major changes, e.g., underline, bold or italicize topical sentence/section (use a convention not otherwise used in your text).
- Consider a reviewer summary table if you have the space, e.g.:
There are samples of 1-page Introductions:
- In the UMMS Grant Proposal Sampler (e.g., Carruthers, Gage)
(The site is password-protected, with the contents restricted to Medical School faculty, staff, and postdoctoral fellows.)
- On the NIH website

External Limited Submissions
These are opportunities in which the sponsor has limited the number of proposals allowed from an institution. These competitions require an internal review to select the proposals to submit to the sponsor from the University of Michigan.
Internal Deadline: September 20, 2011
NOTE: To allow investigators ample time to prepare an internal application, the Medical School Office of Research is initiating an internal competition for this award in anticipation ofan official Request for Nominations from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. The UM Office of Foundation Relations is confident that a competition will be announced. The details outlined here about the award and eligibility requirements are adapted from the internal competition held in 2010. The Office of Research will notify applicants when the Foundation releases this year’s Request for Nominations. If there are changes in award details or eligibility, these will be addressed with the applicants.
The Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Development Award provides grants to junior physician-scientists to facilitate their transition to independent clinical research careers. Three-year grants of $150,000 per year in direct costs and $12,000 per year in indirect costs will be awarded.
Applicants must (1) be a physician-scientist conducting clinical research in any disease area; (2) have received an M.D. or a foreign equivalent from an accredited institution; (3) be working in a U.S. degree-granting institution, but do not have to be a U.S. citizen; (4) have a full-time faculty level position not higher than the Assistant Professor level; and (5) have been appointed to their first full-time faculty level position between January 1, 2007 and January 1, 2012. (All full-time post-fellowship Instructor level positions will be considered full-time faculty level appointments.) To be competitive, it is recommended that nominees have significant research experience and strong publication records.
There are no fellowship level or research associate level awards as part of this competition. In addition, an award will not be made if, prior to the commencement of this award, the applicant has been or becomes the principal investigator on a National Institutes of Health, peer-reviewed, R01 research grant and/or the principal investigator on a research project that is part of a P01 program project or a P50 center grant. Applicants are allowed to hold a National Institutes of Health K series award or other career development award at the same time as the CSDA grant. However, applicants must propose distinct and different research aims in their CSDA application and there should be no scientific or budgetary overlap. The institution must agree to provide the grantee with a minimum of 75% of full-time professional effort to conduct research. Experiments that utilize animals or primary tissues derived from animals will not be supported by this program.
UM may nominate up to two candidates. The anticipated due date for online nominations to the Foundation is mid-November 2011. The anticipated due date for full proposals is mid-December 2011.
Before submitting an application for this internal competition, it is the applicant’s responsibility to verify that both the applicant and their project meet ALL eligibility criteria.
For consideration as an institutional nominee, submit the items below electronically by September 20, 2011 following the instructions listed on the cover sheet. Download the cover sheet and see FAQs.

Foundation Deadline: November 1, 2011 (Preliminary Application)
The Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics is a career development award that enables outstanding junior faculty to carry out original research on policy and moral dilemmas at the intersection of ethics and the life sciences. To maximize Scholars' development, three years of support are provided, requiring a 50% time commitment (carefully monitored) in each of the three years. Each year the Scholars participate in a learner-centered educational program that includes required attendance at two workshops (spring and fall).
Faculty Scholars will be selected on the basis of their achievements, the strength of their research project, their commitment to the field of bioethics, and support from their home institution. While the amount and quality of an applicant’s research in bioethics will count favorably towards his/her application, outstanding candidates with less direct experience in bioethics will be considered.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be junior faculty members holding at least a 60% appointment. Priority will be given to applicants who are below the rank of Associate Professor, who have not received a comparable career development award, and whose work will have an impact on public policy or clinical practice. Approximately 15-20 applicants will be invited by the Foundation to submit full proposals due in February 2012.
UM may submit one preliminary application. The Office of the Vice President for Research will coordinate the internal review process. For consideration as the institutional nominee, submit the following electronically in a single PDF document by October 1, 2011 to (OVPRlimitedsubmissions@umich.edu):
- Nomination letter from the department chair. This letter should explicitly address how the nominee’s work will impact public policy or clinical practice and support the time commitment.
- A letter of intent responsive to the RFP, describing the research proposal and its significance. Please follow the Greenwall Foundation format.
- NIH formatted biosketch.
We encourage you to work with Ann Verhey-Henke, Director, Foundation Relations, in preparing your internal proposal. Ann can provide you with more information about the Greenwall Foundation, the types of projects funded in the Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics, information about the Foundation review process, as well as provide pointers and feedback on writing specifically for this program. To ensure iterative feedback, we suggest you meet with Ann as soon as possible. She can be reached at 734-647-0282 or (averhey@umich.edu).
The University's nominees will be notified promptly of their selection and must then prepare and submit their completed preliminary applications (after routing through UM’s eRPM) to the Greenwall Foundation by Monday, November 1, 2011. Additional information and guidelines for preparation are posted on the Foundation website.
Internal proposals will be evaluated based on the impact and strength of the proposed research; how well the proposal meets the Greenwall Foundation’s stated criteria; and the strength of the nomination letter.
More information is available at the Foundation website. Direct any questions to Christina Pearce (tinajp@umich.edu) or 734-763-1290.

3:00 - 4:00 PM
School of Public Health Building I, Room 2616
The Foundation’s focus remains on identifying creative, unorthodox, transformational solutions that make a difference for health in the developing world. Projects must be oriented in practical ways to solving health problems for a set of core diseases of great interest to the Gates Foundation for people who live in extreme poverty.
UM has had success with these. UM has received 6 awards in the first 7 rounds: Four focusing on HIV - one on basic science mechanisms of RNA, one targeted at latent infected cells, another focused on a novel vaccine approach, and another focused on building a culturally appropriate circumcision device to reduce HIV transmission; one was funded to link biotechnology firms and their innovation with vaccine manufacturers in the developing world; and the other to develop low cost, non-invasion diagnostic tools for a spectrum of diseases.
Topics for Grand Challenges Explorations Round 8 are:
- Protect Crop Plants from Biotic Stresses From Field to Market
- Design New Approaches to Optimize Immunization Systems
- Explore New Solutions for Global Health Priority Areas
- Explore Nutrition for Healthy Growth of Infants and Children
- Apply Synthetic Biology to Global Health Challenges
Proposals can be a basic mechanistic study that opens the way to a whole new field, a new class of compounds, vaccines, etc. But these studies must be oriented toward a health solution. U-M’s experiences over from the past 7 rounds has led us to the following recommendations.
DO:
- Summarize your idea in 2 sentences at the top. You have to capture the reviewers’ interest quickly.
- Read through the category descriptions thoroughly.
- State succinctly and clearly: What is innovative? How this is different? How is this a game changer? What is your deliverable?
- Respond to the Exploration topic of interest.
- Use a title that grabs attention.
- Try again. Many who won, won on their second shot.
DO NOT:
- Propose the next iterative step.
- Use domain specific terminology.
- Spend space writing how great your lab is (no identifying information is allowed).
- Write a 2-page stream of consciousness.
The Review Process:
- Gates receives approximately 3,000 applications per round and funds 80-100. Of those funded, 50% had submitted before (idea is refined, though no feedback was given).
- Each reviewer reads approximately 200-400 proposals.
- Reviewers read through each proposal at most 10 minutes – you have to capture their attention early on to get on their short list.
- Only one reviewer championing your proposal is needed to achieve funding.
The Gates Exploration website has many resources. Here are a few links:
- A full overview of the program
- The application instructions
- Past grants made through the exploration competition. You can sort by topic area, round or technology.
The initial Explorations program has a finite timeline. We expect only 2 or 3 more cycles of this kind of opportunity. It may be extended or renewed if the Gates Foundation deems this strategy effective in recruiting.
If you have questions, you may contact Ann Verhey-Henke and Maureen Martin.
