Gregory Wolf – Distinguished Faculty Lectureship Award Ceremony and Lecture – August 8, 2011
Gregory T. WolfGregory T. Wolf, M.D.

“Changing Treatment Paradigms in Head and Neck Oncology”
Monday, August 8, 2011
4:00 - 5:00 PM
Kahn Auditorium, Taubman Biomedical Science Research Building (BSRB)
A reception will follow the lecture (Taubman BSRB Seminar Rooms).

The Biomedical Research Council (BMRC) has the honor of selecting a faculty member for the Distinguished Faculty Lectureship Award in Biomedical Research each year.  This award, which was initiated in 1979, continues to be the highest research honor bestowed by the Medical School upon a faculty member in the biomedical sciences.  Each recipient has made outstanding contributions in the areas of research, teaching, and institutional service.

Dr. Gregory Wolf, a pioneer in head and neck cancer treatment, has been chosen to receive the Dean’s 2011 Distinguished Faculty Lectureship Award.  Dr. Wolf is Professor and Chair Emeritus of the Department of Otolaryngology.  In addition to being one of the top surgical oncologists in the world, Dr. Wolf is a leading scientific investigator who has played a pivotal role in advancing the field of biomedical research, cancer immunology, and laryngeal preservation cancer. Dr. Wolf’s novel discoveries in cancer biology challenged the status quo, such as the widespread practice of routine larynx removal in patients with advanced cancer. His tested treatment paradigms – now adopted around the world – allow patients with advanced cancer to retain affected organs, maintain crucial functional capacities, avoid disfiguring surgical defects, and enjoy a higher quality of life than previously possible. Currently he is the PI of the U-M Head and Neck NIH SPORE (Specialized Program of Research Excellence) grant, which continues to advance treatments for head and neck cancer patients.  During the 16 years when Dr. Wolf was Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at the UMMS, the Department was consistently among the highest ranked units in the School. In addition to his groundbreaking work in organ sparing therapy and his administrative contributions, Dr. Wolf has been a prolific writer (over 200 articles) and mentor to many.

Report of Your Outside Interests, Activities, or Relationships – Due July 31, 2011

UMHS Policy 01-04-003 on Conflicts of Interest requires faculty members (instructional, clinical, and research tracks), house officers, executives, and management and certain other staff to annually disclose financial and outside interests, activities, or relationships related to their work or position at UMHS that have the real or perceived potential to result in benefit to them or their spouses, domestic partners, or dependents. UMHS Policy also requires that all faculty and staff, regardless of their title, inform their supervisors and principal investigators of any existing or potential conflicts of interest as they arise. You can access M-Inform at (http://www.umms.med.umich.edu/minform/).

Points to consider when assessing whether or not you should report an interest, activity, or relationship include:

The definition of “related.” In this context, “related” means either or both of the following:

  • An interest, activity, or relationship that relies upon your clinical, research, teaching, or other expertise that the University considers part of your work at UMHS; Examples include:
    • Paid or unpaid consulting with a drug company,
    • Service as an expert witness,
    • Lecturer for a device company.
  • An interest, activity, or relationship that has the potential to influence your professional, clinical, research, teaching, or other UMHS duties; Examples include:
    • Owning a healthcare–related company or a company that does business with UM,
    • Equity interest or owning stock in a company,
    • Serving on a Board or Advisory Committee of a healthcare-related company or a company that does business with UMHS,
    • Intellectual property for which one could receive royalties.

The following things are examples of what should not be reported:

  • Salary and/or other support that are administered by DRDA such as a grant from NIH or a research contract from Pfizer.
  • Service as an NIH reviewer.

For more information see the COI Guidance Page.

The requirement to disclose your outside interests assists UMHS in managing real or perceived conflicts of interest or commitment.

Get Involved with Biomedical Innovation

Excited about biomedical innovation?  Interested in working with students?  Looking for an opportunity to explore new exciting biomedical solutions?  The University of Michigan Biomedical Engineering Department is looking to engage members of the UMHS medical community in their biomedical design program for the upcoming academic year.  Clinical faculty and staff that have participated in these programs over the past several years have an opportunity to work with bright engineering students, explore innovative biomedical ideas and take concepts to reality.  Clinical partners/sponsors can participate at all different levels:

  • ENG100 (Biotechnology) – In this freshman-level introductory course taught by Professor Andy Putnam, students work with clinical sponsors to identify clinically-relevant problems that can be solved with the conceptualization of new diagnostic assays.
  • BIOMEDE450 (Senior Design) – In this senior-level design course, students work in teams of 4-6 students to create medical solutions to problems identified by clinicians and clinical researchers (clients).  Students work to identify client needs, develop design specifications, generate solutions, create prototypes and validate the prototypes.  Clients are asked to provide a project idea along with funding for materials and fabrication, present the project to the class, and periodically meet with the team to stay updated on their progress and provide feedback.
  • BIOMEDE599 (Graduate Design) – BiomedE599 is a two semester course that encourages innovative design in biomedical engineering. It is an interactive course that stimulates students to explore their own solutions to biomedical challenges. Students experience the entire spectrum of innovative design, from concept inception to prototype design. The course challenges students to learn about the current state of the art, explore technical need for current challenges, and brainstorm new solutions with members of the medical community.
For more information on ways to participate, visit the website or email (bme-design@umich.edu).  If interested, please email (bme-design@umich.edu) by July 30, 2011.

RESEARCH COMPLIANCE TRAINING AND EDUCATION

Animal Research

Personnel Amendments: A Reminder to Delete and Add!

We all know that when new animal staff are hired, they can’t begin working with animals until they have completed several steps, including being added to the protocol through a Personnel Amendment in eRAM.  Less clear is the importance of removing staff; this article is designed to provide a reminder about updating authorized personnel for animal use protocols and explain why this step is as important as having new staff approved.

When new staff arrive, they will need to complete UCUCA/ULAM training requirements, enroll in the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Animal Handler Medical Surveillance Program, and be approved via a Personnel Amendment to the eRAM protocol in order to work with animals.  This approval allows staff to have access to information on the animal use protocol via eRAM and allows access to animal facilities. The new staff also need to receive training to perform procedures with animals.  The ULAM Training Core provides all training to all animal users and staff and can be accessed through their website.

A common misconception is that the UCUCA will know when staff leave.  This is not true!  If a staff member leaves your laboratory, the university, or simply stops working on a particular protocol and are not removed from the protocol, they still have access to confidential information.  It is just as important to remove staff as it is to add them!  Once staff have been removed, communication occurs between the UCUCA office and other institutional units to remove access (if necessary), requirements for OHS program enrollment, etc.  This step not only removes access, but ensures that limited university resources are not spent attempting to obtain compliance from someone no longer working in your laboratory.

As with any UCUCA process, if you have questions, aren’t sure what to do or where to start, contact the UCUCA Office at (ucuca.office@umich.edu) or 734-763-8028.  We are available to assist you and answer any questions you may have.  Consider us your friendly, neighborhood compliance guides!

SHARPENING THE FOCUS:

Tips on Grant Proposal Preparation

NIH Significance Section = So What?

By Christine Black, Assistant Director for Research Services, Office of Research

Aim for around 2 pages for this section in a 13-page R01.

Purpose of the section:  Answers the question “So what?” Beautiful experiments with great expertise and resources do not guarantee that the results will 1) potentially have a significant impact on human health, or 2) matter to your peers.

Familiarize your reviewers with your field: Customize the content. If reviewers are unfamiliar with your field, provide more information on basic biology, importance of the area, gaps, and new findings. To determine expertise and potential biases of your reviewers, be sure to choose the study section and review the roster at:
http://www.csr.nih.gov/Roster_proto/sectionI.asp

Describe status quo: Tell the reviewers what is known and not known in your field, and why it matters. Give your expert evaluation of the gap (after all, who knows better? you are a national expert). As background, for example, offer disease prevalence data and a short description of the morbidity. Cite relevant literature (not a comprehensive literature review) for background, progress, gaps, challenges, and importance of work in the field, along with a brief summary of your preliminary data.

Describe how your work will advance the field:  Include your long term plans – where is this leading? Remember the word “impact.”

Checkpoints: After conveying the significance of the research (in this and other parts of the application), check that:

  • In the Significance section, I describe the importance of my hypothesis to the field (especially if my reviewers are not in it) and human disease.
  • The application shows that I am aware of opportunities, gaps, roadblocks, and research underway in my field.
  • I state how my research will advance my field, highlighting knowledge gaps and showing how my project fills one or more of them.
