REMINDER: Before You Ship Hazardous Materials – Including Dry Ice – You Must Attend Training!

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently notified the University of potential violations of Federal hazardous materials shipping regulations. Several packages containing dry ice have been caught during random inspections at Detroit Metro Airport without the required identity of contents and proper labeling. Dry ice is regulated by the FAA as a hazardous material when used in shipping.

Any campus employee who intends to ship hazardous materials including biological specimens – with or without dry ice – must be trained on the appropriate methods of preparing packages, labeling, marking, and manifesting.  This includes those who prepare paperwork for hazardous materials shipments and those who pack the parcels for shipment.  Occupational Safety and Environmental Health (OSEH) offers certification training for shippers of hazardous materials, including dry ice.  For questions or to sign up for training, please call 734-763-6973 or visit the OSEH website.

Bridging the Gap Between Biotechnology Companies and Large Pharma (April 13)

Wednesday, April 13, 2011
5:00 - 7:00 PM  (5:00 PM - Networking, 6:00 PM - Program)
North Campus Research Complex, Building 18

With opening remarks by Dr. Ora Pescovitz, U-M Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs, featured speaker Dr. Peter Corr examines how most large pharmaceutical companies are moving away from an R&D organization with in-house capabilities to a “discovery cluster” model.  In this model, small biotech companies focused on platform technologies or therapeutics play a key role, alongside contract research organizations and academic/institute laboratories as loose consortia with large pharma.  The pharmaceutical companies then integrate common goals and specified deliverables with their partners to further development of potential drug products.  Dr. Corr, past Pfizer Vice President and currently General Partner in Celtic Therapeutics, will offer his perspective on the fast-changing world of pharmaceutical R&D and the opportunities that exist for emerging biotech companies.  This free event is sponsored by BioArbor and UMMS Business Development.  Registration required.

Animal Research

eRAM is Coming!

The UCUCA office and ITS are very excited about the upcoming transition from eSirius to eResearch Animal Management (eRAM)!  eRAM will streamline the application, review, and approval process by eliminating redundancies currently found in the eSirius protocol application.  In addition, eRAM will allow investigators, departments, and units to better manage protocol and animal use data.  There are a number of exciting features in eRAM, and we encourage all of you to visit the UCUCA website and sign up for the training courses which will be offered over the next several months.

eRAM will go live on April 18, 2011.  New protocols can be entered into eRAM as of April 18, 2011.  Renewal protocols and amendments to existing protocols can be entered into eRAM as of May 2, 2011.  As we begin the move to the new system, the UCUCA Office would like to share the following tips and tricks that should make transition easier:

  1. Anyone with access to eSirius will automatically have access to eRAM.  In addition, all personnel listed on a protocol will have access and be able to view their protocols in eRAM.
  2. There are now four different types of amendments to your protocol:  Personnel Amendments, Funding Amendments, Scientific Amendments, and PI Changes.  eRAM will allow you to submit different types of amendments at the same time, there is no longer any need to wait until your Scientific Amendment is complete to submit a Personnel Amendment.
  3. Only a Principal Investigator (PI) can start a new protocol.  Once the protocol has been started, the PI can easily add personnel and assign someone from the laboratory to be an editor on the protocol.  From that point, either the PI or the editor(s) can continue working on the protocol.
  4. All new personnel on protocols will have eRAM “view only” access once the PI enters them onto the protocol.  If personnel need to be able to edit a protocol on behalf of the PI, the PI can add them as editors on a protocol.

If you ever have any questions regarding the transition to eRAM, UCUCA or anything else related to your animal work or compliance, please do not hesitate to contact the UCUCA Office (ucuca.office@umich.edu or 734-763-8028).

The 2011 AAALAC Site Visit

The Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC) visited the University of Michigan from March 7 - 11, 2011.  The UCUCA Office would like to thank all of the participants who made the visit a success.  The site visitors presented their commendations and concerns to the department. The University compiled its response to these issues, and a letter of communications was sent out March 25, 2011.  The site visitors will take their report to the AAALAC council who will determine the accreditations status of the University sometime in May.

If you ever have any questions regarding the AAALAC site visit, UCUCA or anything else related to your animal work or compliance, please do not hesitate to contact the UCUCA Office (ucuca.office@umich.edu or 734-763-8028).

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Video Available Online: NIH Requirements for My Bibliography and eRA Commons

Ever since the NIH Public Access Policy was instituted and put into effect on April 7, 2008, Principal Investigators (PIs) and Program Directors (PDs) have used eRA (electronic Research Administration) Commons as a repository for their bibliographies or lists of their authored publications/research. To comply with NIH’s Public Access policy, it is now mandated that Principal Investigators (PIs) and Program Directors (PDs) use My NCBI’s online portal “My Bibliography” to manage their bibliographies. Citations must be added to My Bibliography to ensure that they appear in eRA Commons and thereby become associated with future annual progress reports. My Bibliography helps users address NIH Public Access compliance by assigning the appropriate NIH grant(s) with publications and expedites and facilitates their deposit into the National Institutes of Health Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS).

A lecture was offered on March 17, 2011 that provided a succinct overview of the NIH Public Access Policy, explaining the use of the My NCBI’s My Bibliography for managing eRA Commons and for complying with the NIH Public Access Policy. Links to a video of this lecture and the slide presentation are available online.

Lupus Research Institute - Novel Research Grants
Deadline: May 27, 2011

The Lupus Research Institute seeks to support highly promising, idea-driven approaches to finding the cause, improving treatment, and curing lupus.  The Institute is accepting funding applications for novel research projects relevant to systemic lupus erythematosus. Annual funding of up to $100,000 per year, for a term of up to three years, will be awarded for approved projects.

Research applications will be judged principally on the novelty of the hypotheses, scientific quality, strength of approach, relevance to lupus, and likelihood of success. Creativity will be valued. Rationale for the hypotheses proposed rather than amount of preliminary data will be emphasized. Continuations of long-term research projects are not appropriate for this call.

Projects on aspects of the disease that have been less extensively studied and applications from investigators in diverse disciplines, including those who may not have previously worked in lupus, are encouraged. Investigations should be relevant to basic, translational, or clinical research on lupus.

While the institute encourages projects based on novel explorations of human lupus biology — innovative studies that use human material to address the physiological, cellular, molecular and/or genetic basis of human lupus — projects solely based on cellular, molecular, and/or animal models are also encouraged.

View more information online. In the last round of funding 12 awards were made for a total of $3.6M (view specifics on these awards).
