OVPR UM Research Faculty Awards
Deadline: February 21, 2011

The University has established three awards to recognize the important role our Research Faculty play in the intellectual life and work of the University of Michigan.  Please review the criteria for these three awards and consider nominating your most outstanding and talented Research Faculty colleagues:

  • Collegiate Research Professorship – designed to recognize exceptional scholarly achievement and impact on advancing knowledge in science, engineering, health, education, the arts, the humanities or other academic field of study.  Exceptional ability to convey the excitement and significance of scholarship and creative activities to the educated public.  The Collegiate Research Professorship is a named award and carries an annual stipend of $2,000 for the initial five-year term.
  • Research Faculty Achievement Award – designed to recognize outstanding scholarly achievements, as represented by significant contributions to an academic field of study over time, a specific outstanding discovery, or the development of innovative technology.  Recipients will be awarded $1,500.
  • Research Faculty Recognition Award – designed to recognize exceptional scholarly achievements, as evidenced by publications and/or other scholarly activities in any academic field of study.  Recipients will be awarded $1,000.

Each of the Awardees will have a prominently displayed announcement and profile of their careers and work in a fall issue of the University Record.  The awards are conferred at the annual Faculty Awards Ceremony and dinner hosted by the President each fall. Nominees must hold at least a 75% appointment in the research faculty track to be eligible for these awards. Tenured and tenure-track faculty are not eligible.

For complete details, visit the website. Contact Jane Ritter (734-763-1290 or ritterj@umich.edu) with any questions.

External Limited Submissions

These are opportunities in which the sponsor has limited the number of proposals allowed from an institution. These competitions require an internal review to select the proposals to submit to the sponsor from the University of Michigan.

David and Lucile Packard Foundation Fellowships for Science and Engineering
Internal Deadline: February 11, 2011
(Nominees identified to Foundation by March 15, 2011)
Foundation Deadline: April 20, 2011

The intent of the Fellowship Program is to provide support for unusually creative researchers early in their careers and to emphasize support for innovative individual research that involves the Fellows, their students, and junior colleagues, rather than extensions or components of large-scale, ongoing research programs.

Eligible candidates:  Faculty members engaged in research in the natural and physical sciences or engineering.  Candidates must be faculty members in the first three years of their faculty career, that is, whose initial faculty appointments began no earlier than May 31, 2008, and no later than May 31, 2011.

Disciplines that will be considered include physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, computer science, earth science, ocean science, and all branches of engineering. Candidates engaged in research in the social sciences will not be considered.  The awards provide individual grants of $875,000 distributed over five years.

NOTE: Not all eligibility criteria may be listed in this abstract.  Before submitting an application for this internal competition, it is the applicant’s responsibility to visit the foundation website (listed below) and verify that both the applicant and their project meet ALL eligibility criteria.

The University of Michigan has been invited to nominate up to two faculty members to apply. For consideration as an institutional nominee, submit the following electronically in a single PDF document by February 11, 2011 to (OVPRlimitedsubmissions@umich.edu):

  1. Nomination letter from the department chair.  This letter should explicitly address the impact that the Packard would have on the career of the nominee and the strength of external references.
  2. A research statement responsive to the RFP, describing why the research is important and outlining the general goals for the next five years.  Please follow the Packard format.
  3. NIH formatted biosketch.
  4. Names, institutions,  brief biographies, and relationship to candidate of three external references. At least one reference must have had no supervisory or collaborative contact with the nominee.  For each reference, please list employment history and award(s) honor(s) received.  (e.g., former Packard Fellow, member of National Academy, etc.)

Internal proposals will be evaluated based on the impact and strength of the proposed research; how well the proposal meets the Packard Foundation stated criteria; the qualifications of the named external references; and the strength of the nomination letter.

We encourage you to work with Ann Verhey-Henke, Director, Foundation Relations, in preparing your internal proposal.  Ann can provide you with more information about the Packard Foundation, the types of projects funded in the Fellowships for Science and Engineering program, information about the Foundation review process, as well as provide pointers and feedback on writing specifically for a Packard Fellowship.  Successful nominees’ proposals have the following characteristics:

  • Proposal explains clearly why the idea is out of the box, risky and innovative (i.e. the kind of idea that will generate discussion amongst panel members).
  • The work and its significance is put in context of the larger field.
  • Proposals are accessible to a group of very successful scientists from a diverse set of fields (i.e. stay away from field specific jargon).
  • High impact referees that can emphasize how a fellowship will make a significant impact on the nominee’s career and how it will make that difference for them.

To ensure iterative feedback, we suggest you meet with Ann as soon as possible.  She can be reached at 734-647-0282 or (averhey@umich.edu).

The University's nominees will be notified promptly of their selection and must then prepare and submit their completed applications (after routing through U-M’s eRPM) to the Packard Foundation by Tuesday, April 20, 2011.  Additional information and guidelines for preparation are posted on the Foundation website.

Please contact Jane Ritter (ritterj@umich.edu or 763-1290) with questions regarding this fellowship program. Further information on this and other current funding opportunities may be found online.
