UM Medical Innovation Center Fellowship Program – Call for Applications
Deadline: January 7, 2011

The University of Michigan Medical Innovation Center's (MIC) Fellowship Program assembles a team of talented post-graduates in medicine, engineering and business to develop medical technology ideas that will significantly impact human health. The “anti-disciplinary” nature of the program seeks to blur the boundaries of the three disciplines as the Fellows work together as a team to identify unmet clinical needs and develop solutions for them. The medical member of the team must have at least two years of clinical experience and can apply for either a one or two year fellowship.

The MIC Fellowship is a full-time hands-on educational program. The curriculum is delivered in a variety of modes:

  • visits to medical device companies
  • formal training in observation techniques from a world-class organization
  • online videos with facilitated discussions
  • personal interactions with industry and thought leaders
  • participation in relevant conferences and seminars
  • training in our Design and Prototype Lab
  • direct clinical observation facilities by medical faculty
  • working/communication style activities facilitated by professional team coach

The topics of these curriculum units span the broad set of issues that a successful medical technology innovation must understand: regulatory approval, reimbursement strategies, intellectual property protection, marketing and distribution, animal and human subject trials, venture creation and financing.

Positions now being accepted for post grads in business, engineering and medicine.

At a minimum, each MIC Fellows exits the program with a strong understanding of all the aspects of medical technology development and commercialization. Past classes have actually launched companies that are now furthering product development, securing regulatory approval and marketing their product ideas. Throughout the program, the Fellows develop personal relationships with industry leaders and mentors who comprise a medical technology ecosystem upon which they can draw in the future. During the program, the team is counseled by a professional team coach. The medical member of the Fellowship Class typically returns to his/her practice area, but with skills that will enable the identification and development of medical technology ideas to impact human health.

BMRC Bridging Support Program for Biomedical Research
Deadline: January 17, 2011

The Medical School’s Office of Research brings your attention to a re-prioritization of the BMRC Bridging Support Program for Biomedical Research.  Bridging Support provides funding for federally funded biomedical research projects with a demonstrated likelihood of continued funding after resubmission (up to $40,000 for one year from the BMRC with required matching from the PI's department).  In consideration of the reduction of NIH resubmission opportunities (from two to one), the program will focus on bridging a non-funded gap of time during preparation of an A1 application, will cease to support any new grants, and will not consider previous special circumstances (e.g., first R01s following a non-renewable award, such as a K08 or R21; or R01s that spun off independently from a Program Project).

To be eligible, the PI must have submitted the renewal grant and received the reviewers' summary statement in preparation of a resubmission.  Eligibility is also limited to full-time, on-campus instructional and research faculty with primary appointments in the Medical School.  Grants to be bridged must reside in the Medical School.

The bridging application deadlines are January 15, June 15, and September 15.

Clarification for January 2011 deadline: Since January 15, 2011 falls on a Saturday, applicants may have until Monday, January 17, 2011 (11:59 PM) to submit their application.

Please refer to the website for more details.  If you have questions, please contact Camille Mrozowski at (cmrozow@umich.edu).

Shipping Dry Ice or Specimens? Follow Guidelines Carefully - Get Trained Today!

In recent months, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has reported instances of inappropriate packaging for shipments containing dry ice or biological specimens. During random inspections at DTW, several dry ice packages sent from U-M have been without the required identity of contents, including disclosure of dry ice in the package. Further incidents will result in a $10,000 fine.

Specific procedures are required for handling, packaging and shipping materials refrigerated with dry ice (or carbon dioxide solid). Any employee who intends to ship a hazardous material, including biological specimens with or without dry ice, must be trained on the appropriate methods of preparing packages.

The U-M Dept of Occupational Safety and Environmental Health (OSEH) offers training and certification for shipping biological materials and dry ice. For questions or training registration call 734-763 6973 or visit the OSEH website.

Report Suspicious Requests for Information about Developing Synthetic Biological Agents

Synthetic biology is a growing, promising field that could yield products such as new medicines and alternative fuels.  Synthetic biology could also potentially be exploited to create illegal or counterfeit drugs or both, as well as other agents.  Moreover, a growing amateur biology community movement – i.e., Do-It-Yourself Biology (DIYbio) – raises the possibility that people will increasingly be able to manipulate agents of all kinds in small labs in homes and in start-up businesses.  Outreach has been conducted by the FBI to encourage community members in Michigan and elsewhere to reach out to public health and safety agencies to ensure that their work is done safely and securely.

Please let the local FBI office know about any "concerned citizen" reporting or any suspicious requests for information on how to make or access dangerous or illegal substances or to access supplies that could be used to manufacture agents that are illegal or otherwise pose a risk to the general population.  Additionally, please contact the local FBI office if you are engaged in synthetic biology research that could be vulnerable to intellectual property theft or potentially exploited for illegal or unsafe purposes so that we can better partner with you on keeping your research and our communities safe.  Call 313-965-2323 to be connected with your local FBI office.

Internal Deadline: February 11, 2011
(Nominees identified to Foundation by March 15, 2011)
Foundation Deadline: April 20, 2011

The intent of the Fellowship Program is to provide support for unusually creative researchers early in their careers and to emphasize support for innovative individual research that involves the Fellows, their students, and junior colleagues, rather than extensions or components of large-scale, ongoing research programs.

Eligible candidates:  Faculty members engaged in research in the natural and physical sciences or engineering.  Candidates must be faculty members in the first three years of their faculty career, that is, whose initial faculty appointments began no earlier than May 31, 2008, and no later than May 31, 2011.

Disciplines that will be considered include physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, computer science, earth science, ocean science, and all branches of engineering. Candidates engaged in research in the social sciences will not be considered.  The awards provide individual grants of $875,000 distributed over five years.

NOTE: Not all eligibility criteria may be listed in this abstract.  Before submitting an application for this internal competition, it is the applicant’s responsibility to visit the foundation website (listed below) and verify that both the applicant and their project meet ALL eligibility criteria.

The University of Michigan has been invited to nominate up to two faculty members to apply. For consideration as an institutional nominee, submit the following electronically in a single PDF document by February 11, 2011 to (OVPRlimitedsubmissions@umich.edu):

  1. Nomination letter from the department chair.  This letter should explicitly address the impact that the Packard would have on the career of the nominee and the strength of external references.
  2. A research statement responsive to the RFP, describing why the research is important and outlining the general goals for the next five years.  Please follow the Packard format.
  3. NIH formatted biosketch.
  4. Names, institutions,  brief biographies, and relationship to candidate of three external references. At least one reference must have had no supervisory or collaborative contact with the nominee.  For each reference, please list employment history and award(s) honor(s) received.  (e.g., former Packard Fellow, member of National Academy, etc.)

Internal proposals will be evaluated based on the impact and strength of the proposed research; how well the proposal meets the Packard Foundation stated criteria; the qualifications of the named external references; and the strength of the nomination letter.

We encourage you to work with Ann Verhey-Henke, Director, Foundation Relations, in preparing your internal proposal.  Ann can provide you with more information about the Packard Foundation, the types of projects funded in the Fellowships for Science and Engineering program, information about the Foundation review process, as well as provide pointers and feedback on writing specifically for a Packard Fellowship.  Successful nominees’ proposals have the following characteristics:

  • Proposal explains clearly why the idea is out of the box, risky and innovative (i.e. the kind of idea that will generate discussion amongst panel members).
  • The work and its significance is put in context of the larger field.
  • Proposals are accessible to a group of very successful scientists from a diverse set of fields (i.e. stay away from field specific jargon).
  • High impact referees that can emphasize how a fellowship will make a significant impact on the nominee’s career and how it will make that difference for them.

To ensure iterative feedback, we suggest you meet with Ann as soon as possible.  She can be reached at 734-647-0282 or (averhey@umich.edu).

The University's nominees will be notified promptly of their selection and must then prepare and submit their completed applications (after routing through U-M’s eRPM) to the Packard Foundation by Tuesday, April 20, 2011.  Additional information and guidelines for preparation are posted on the Foundation website.

Please contact Jane Ritter (ritterj@umich.edu or 763-1290) with questions regarding this fellowship program. Further information on this and other current funding opportunities may be found online.
