2-Photon Microscope Now Available for Researchers

The Microscopy and Image-analysis Laboratory (MIL) is pleased to make available a 2-photon confocal microscope system for researchers across campus. This system represents the next level of laser based fluorescent microscopy systems that will allow our researchers to image deeper into tissues -- either fixed or live -- minimizing damage associated with conventional filter based laser confocal systems. The purchase of this microscope, first suggested through the Dean’s Office Hours program at the Medical School and supported by the Dean, was made possible with funding from several internal sources. Visit (http://www.med.umich.edu/cdb/mil/) for more information.

Inexpensive Terabyte Storage Now Available

A message from Information and Technology Services (ITS):

ITS wants to provide storage solutions not only to IT staff with various users, but also to researchers who may not have IT support.  A new cost-effective solution for storing large quantities of data is now available from Information and Technology Services (ITS). Called Value Storage, it is available in terabyte increments, providing bulk storage access with performance similar to a local disk.  For complete information, visit (http://www.itcs.umich.edu/storage/value/)

This solution is Network File System (NFS)-based, compatible with UNIX, Linux, FreeBSD, and Macs. ITS provides 24/7 monitoring and your space is available on-campus 24/7. For more details, review the Service Level Agreement (http://www.itcs.umich.edu/storage/value/sla.php).

Full-scale backup is not offered through Value Storage, and needs to be purchased separately (http://www.itcs.umich.edu/backup/).  There is no immediate retrieval of backed-up files. Space is available in two flavors:

  • Regular Value Storage: includes disaster recovery
  • Value Storage Lite: no disaster recovery

Order online at (https://provisioning.its.umich.edu/value_storage/). Please be advised that the rates for these new services are subject to final approval by the Office of Financial Analysis. There will be no charge for this service until rates are approved and no retroactive billing for the period up to the establishment of rates.

Seven units have piloted the service for the past three months, including the Center for the Study of Complex Systems, Computer Aided Engineering Network, Kinesiology, Physics and Mathematics. “Value Storage meets my unit needs by providing bulk storage access without the physical space, power, cooling, and last, but not the least - staff time!  In addition, it provides fast access to large amounts of storage in a time frame we could not meet,” explains Faye Ogasawara, IT manager, Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences.

The Michigan Metabolomics and Obesity Center (MMOC) and the Michigan Nutrition and Obesity Research Center (MNORC) announce their 2010 call for proposals to promote interdisciplinary, cross-organizational, collaborative research to advance cutting-edge research at the University of Michigan on nutrition, obesity and related diseases.

The purpose of this program is to promote research on the biological and behavioral determinants of obesity, and to develop interventions to reduce obesity and its disease sequelae using basic, clinical, or population approaches. The program’s aim is to enable both new and established University of Michigan investigators to generate sufficient preliminary information for a successful application for major research funding from NIH or other national granting agencies.

Grant proposals may be in areas of basic biomedical research or in clinical, epidemiological, or translational research, e.g., interventions in clinical or population-based settings.  Animal or human models may be considered.  Grant proposals involving cross-disciplinary expertise, faculty from different UM schools, and that utilize the core laboratories of the MMOC are especially encouraged.

Individuals who have full-time instructional or research faculty positions at the University of Michigan are eligible to apply as Principal Investigators of P/F proposals.  Eligible applicants are: (a) new investigators beginning careers in research on nutrition and obesity; (b) established investigators in areas of biomedical research who wish to focus their expertise on nutrition, obesity and related areas; or (c) established nutritional sciences or obesity investigators who wish to take an entirely new direction from their usual work.  This new direction cannot be an extension or outgrowth of research currently being undertaken by the applicant.

Proposals are for one year of support with funding up to $50,000. Anticipated funding to begin January 1, 2011. For the application and further instructions, visit (http://www.med.umich.edu/mmoc/pandf).

Burroughs Wellcome Fund Investigators in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease
Internal Deadline: September 10, 2010

The Investigators in the Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease award program provides $500,000 over a period of five years ($100,000 per year). The goal of the program is to provide opportunities for accomplished investigators still early in their careers to study the pathogenesis of infectious disease at its most fundamental level – the points where human and microbial systems connect. The program supports research that sheds light on the fundamentals that affect the outcomes of this encounter: how colonization, infection, commensalism and other relationships play out at levels ranging from molecular interactions to systemic ones. BWF is particularly interested in work focused on the host, as well as host-pathogen studies originating in viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasite systems. Studies supported by the program may have their roots in the pathogen, but the focus of the work should be on the interplay of host and microbe. Research on under-studied infectious diseases, including pathogenic fungi, protozoan and metazoan diseases, and emerging infections is especially of interest. Biochemical, pharmacological, molecular, genetic, immunologic, and other approaches are all appropriate for support by the program.

Candidates will generally have a M.D., D.V.M., or Ph.D. degree. Candidates must (1) have an established record of independent research and hold a tenure-track position as an assistant professor or equivalent (at the time of application) and (2) be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. or Canada at the time of application.

UM may nominate two candidates. To encourage applications from veterinarians, institutions that nominate a researcher who holds the D.V.M. will be allowed three nominations. Institutions may have a single additional nomination if they nominate a researcher working in pathogenic helminths, mycology, or reproductive science. The Foundation deadline is November 1, 2010.

NOTE: Not all eligibility criteria may be listed in this abstract. Before submitting an application for this internal competition, it is the applicant’s responsibility to visit the foundation website and verify that both the applicant and their project meet ALL eligibility criteria.

For consideration as an institutional nominee, submit the following electronically in a single PDF document – in the order listed – by September 10, 2010 to (limitedsubmissions@umich.edu):

We acknowledge receipt of all electronic submissions. If you do not receive a response from us by the end of the next business day, please call us at 734-763-4086. Contact Kathryn Ridner at 734-763-4086 or (kridner@umich.edu) with any questions.

  • Funds may be used for salary, health insurance, or travel related to a scientific meeting, but not for the purchase of supplies or equipment or other fringe benefits.
  • No part of the Fellowship may cover institutional overhead or other indirect costs, nor should the recipient or the sponsoring research laboratory be obligated or penalized to pay by substitution such indirect costs by any other means.
  • At the conclusion of funding, the Hartwell Fellow should submit a summary of the impact that the award had on their career goals.

UM is allowed to put forth one nominee for the postdoctoral fellowship. The name of the nominee is due to the Foundation by November 1, 2010. For consideration as the institutional nominee, submit the following electronically in a single PDF document – in the order listed – by September 15, 2010 to (limitedsubmissions@umich.edu):

Consistent with the spirit of the Hartwell Foundation, the research plan should describe how the work will benefit children, have translational impacts, and make a difference in the field. We acknowledge receipt of all electronic submissions. If you do not receive a response from us by the end of the next business day, please call us at 734-763-4086. Contact Kathryn Ridner at 734-763-4086 or (kridner@umich.edu) with any questions.

The Greenwall Foundation Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics
Internal Deadline: October 1, 2010
Foundation Deadline: November 1, 2010 (Preliminary Application)

The Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics is a career development award that enables outstanding junior faculty to carry out original research that will help resolve important policy and clinical dilemmas at the intersection of ethics and the life sciences. To maximize Scholars' development, three years of support are provided, requiring a 50% time commitment (carefully monitored) in each of the three years.  Each year the Scholars participate in a learner-centered educational program that includes required attendance at two workshops (spring and fall).

Faculty Scholars will be selected on the basis of their achievements, the strength of their research project, their commitment to the field of bioethics, and support from their home institution.  While the amount of an applicant’s original work in bioethics will count favorably towards his/her application, outstanding candidates with less direct experience in bioethics will also be considered.

ELIGIBILITY:  Applicants must be junior faculty members holding at least a 60% appointment.  Priority will be given to applicants who are below the rank of Associate Professor, who have not received a comparable career development award, and whose work will have an impact on public policy or clinical practice.  Approximately 15-20 applicants will be invited by the Foundation to submit full proposals due in February 2011.

UM may submit one preliminary application.  The Office of the Vice President for Research will coordinate the internal review process.  For consideration as the institutional nominee, submit the following electronically in a single PDF document by October 1, 2010 to (OVPRlimitedsubmissions@umich.edu):

  • Nomination letter from the department chair.  This letter should explicitly address how the nominee’s work will impact public policy or clinical practice and support the time commitment.
  • A letter of intent responsive to the RFP, describing the research proposal and its significance.  Please follow the Greenwall Foundation format.
  • NIH formatted biosketch.

Internal proposals will be evaluated based on the impact and strength of the proposed research, how well the proposal meets the Greenwall Foundation’s stated criteria, and the strength of the nomination letter.

We encourage you to work with Ann Verhey-Henke, Director, Foundation Relations, in preparing your internal proposal.  Ann can provide you with more information about the Greenwall Foundation, the types of projects funded in the Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics, information about the Foundation review process, as well as provide pointers and feedback on writing specifically for this program. To ensure iterative feedback, we suggest you meet with Ann as soon as possible.  She can be reached at 734-647-0282 or (averhey@umich.edu).

The University's nominees will be notified promptly of their selection and must then prepare and submit their completed preliminary applications (after routing through UM’s eRPM) to the Greenwall Foundation by Monday, November 1, 2010.  Additional information and guidelines for preparation are posted on the Foundation website (http://www.greenwallfsp.org/fspApply.htm).

More information is available at the Foundation website (http://www.greenwallfsp.org/). Direct any questions to Jane Ritter at (ritterj@umich.edu) or 734-763-1290.
