Dear Colleagues:
I strongly believe there are many opportunities to partner with industry and explore innovative partnerships to accelerate the research lifecycle and the forward movement of potential new therapies, devices, diagnostics and biomedical tools. But without a coordinated effort and investment, we will be limited in our ability to bring these kinds of partnerships to fruition. Jim Woolliscroft and I have recently agreed to grow this part of our research enterprise. To that end, a new unit of my office, the Business Development and Strategic Partnership team, will be working with you to develop new external relationships and build upon those we already have.
This Team, working alongside U-M Office of Technology Transfer, the Business Engagement Center (BEC), the Medical Innovation Center (MIC), and other strong Entrepreneurial programs across campus, will seek to accelerate and advance the movement of medical research and innovation toward the marketplace.
The Team will be working together with faculty to:
- Catalyze collaborative partnerships between U-M faculty and the business community – locally, nationally and internationally.
- Foster the U-M entrepreneurial culture needed to nurture and support translational bioscience.
- Create novel resources, tools and potentially funding streams for biomedical research and accelerating new therapies, devices, diagnostics and tools to the marketplace.
The team leader, Connie Chang, has been with the Medical School since July 2009. She brings industry experience, as well as initial successes at UM that include developing our ongoing partnership with GE Healthcare Medical Diagnostics, crafting potential partnerships with a number of global healthcare companies, and leading efforts to bring the first external company and partnership to NCRC.
The Team, reporting to me and to Teri Grieb, will be fully staffed by July 2010. As a team, they bring a wealth of experience and passion for helping the academic world and industry work together. I will update the Med School community periodically on the team's activities and successes and will seek your advice as we develop key performance indicators. Please join us in welcoming our new UMMS Business Development and Strategic Partnership Team.

The Medical School Office of Research has launched a new online resource, the NIH Fellowship Proposal Sampler. This is a repository of sample proposal and proposal sections that have been donated by UM graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty members. The purpose of this repository is to offer insight into proposal development, including: proposal writing (e.g., organization, detail); responding to reviewers' comments; ways to respond to required sections; etc.
This gallery is password-protected and can be accessed by all UM graduate students and postdoctoral fellows as well as Medical School faculty and staff. Users are required to login using their uniqname and Level 1 (Kerberos) password.
Currently, the site contains examples of F31 and K99/R00 proposals. We are soliciting more examples of successfully resubmitted proposal samples, i.e., the original proposal, the reviewers’ comments (NIH summary sheets), and the successfully revised resubmissions. We are especially interested in F32 proposals as well as F31, F32 or K99/R00 proposals that follow the new NIH guidelines (shorter page limits and scored with the 1 - 9 scale). Please consider donating your successful fellowship proposal with the reviewers’ comments.
Contact Chris Black at (ckblack@umich.edu or 734-615-1630) with samples that you are willing to share, or suggestions or comments about the sample proposal site.
The Medical School Office of Research has established several resources to help researchers develop successful grant proposals. EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Friday, June 18, 2010
8:00 - 9:00 AM
M3330 Med Sci I
Speaker: Dennis Meredith, Science Writer and author of Explaining Research
Your research success depends not only on conducting incisive experiments and publishing in top journals. You must also explain your work clearly and engagingly to important audiences: your colleagues, potential collaborators in other disciplines, funding agencies and foundations, donors, corporate partners, students, legislators, your own family and friends, journalists, and the public.
In this presentation sponsored by the Medical School Office of Research, Dennis Meredith will review concepts of clear writing for both scientific and lay audiences. If you desire, bring examples of prose requirements that are challenging, or writing examples you would like to improve.
Biography: Dennis Meredith's career as a science communicator has included service at MIT, Caltech, Cornell, Duke, and the University of Wisconsin. He has worked with science journalists at all the nation's major newspapers, magazines, and radio and TV networks, and has written well over a thousand news releases and magazine articles on science and engineering over his career. In 2007, he was elected as a AAAS Fellow "for exemplary leadership in university communications, and for important contributions to the theory and practice of research communication." For more information on Mr. Meredith, please visit (http://www.explainingresearch.com).
All are welcome to attend. Online registration is requested.

Internal Deadline: July 15, 2010
Foundation Deadline: November 1, 2010
The Hartwell Foundation Individual Biomedical Research Award provides support for three years at $100,000 direct cost per year. The goal of the program is to support early-stage, innovative, and cutting-edge biomedical research that has not yet qualified for significant funding from outside sources and that should benefit children. The Foundation in particular seems driven by leading edge science that has a “story” to it, and that the board member can “visualize.” That means that there is a bit of bias toward somewhat applied research where one can visualize the (eventual) young patients. The Foundation’s website offers profiles of much of its supported work including the names of researchers and the titles of their projects. That may be useful to you as you consider this opportunity.
Michigan has received five of these awards in the last four years: one each (with primary appointments) in Pharmacy (Victor Yang), Pharmacology (Asim Beg), BioMedical Engineering (Charles Cain), Pediatrics (Jamie Ferrara) and Pediatric Surgery (Daniel Teitelbaum). Please feel free to ask these scholars for feedback on ideas you may have for a Hartwell Foundation proposal. The Hartwell Foundation hosts annual gatherings of its scholars and thus these scientists have exposure to the full complement of supported researchers.
Candidates should (1) be a citizen of the United States, (2) hold a full-time appointment in the sponsoring institution, and (3) be eligible to serve as a principal investigator in biomedical research. UM may nominate four candidates.
For consideration as an institutional nominee, submit the following electronically in a single PDF document to (feldkamp@umich.edu) by July 15, 2010: a 3-page research summary, a NIH formatted biosketch, and a nominating letter from the department chair. UM candidates selected to be nominated will be informed by early September. A full proposal will be due to the Foundation by November 1, 2010.
A complete copy of The Hartwell Foundation's "Application Process and Administrative Guidelines" is available online. Contact Julie Feldkamp (734-763-4522 or feldkamp@umich.edu), Maureen Martin (734-647-6074 or martinms@umich.edu) or Marvin Parnes (734-764-7231 or mgparnes@umich.edu) with any questions.
