Requesting Medical School and NCRC Research Space

Effective: August 13, 2012

The Medical School and NCRC Administration have implemented the following process for Medical School Departments requesting research space. This process is intended to facilitate the flow of information between Medical School units and Medical School Administration, and increase efficiency along the timeline of the request.

The following guidelines and processes apply to all requests from Medical School Departments for research space within the Medical School and NCRC.

Who May Submit a Request for Research Space?

Research space requests must come from the Department Chairman.
Center Directors, Program Directors, and faculty must route their requests through their administrative Department Chairman.


Documenting and Submitting a Request

The request will be transmitted to the Research Space Response Team, made up of


Space Request Review

All requests will be viewed immediately by the Research Space Response Team, and then taken to the Faculty Space Advisory Committee, which meets once a month. Response time may vary based on the request. Current membership of the faculty committee:

Criteria for Review of Space Requests

The Medical School Research Space Policy outlines the principles for assignment of research space. The current productivity metric is $IDC/sqft, or Indirect Cost expenditures per square foot of Medical School research space, as defined within the Space Policy. The current benchmark level for research space productivity is $110 IDC per square foot of research space.

The Faculty Space Advisory committee will review requests within the framework of the Space Policy, while also considering other factors such as the current inventory of available space and the level of institutional support, based on the strategic direction of the research enterprise at the University of Michigan.


Recommendations

The recommendations of the Faculty Space Advisory Committee will be forwarded to the Senior Associate Dean for Research, Dr. Steve Kunkel, for consideration.
Specific requests for NCRC space will be forwarded to NCRC Executive Director David Canter.
