Apply to the
Submit a Recommendation Letter

How To Apply

The application process is strictly electronic. Please choose "Apply to the Program" in the navigation menu to create / update your application.

New Application

As a New Applicant, from the "Apply to the Program" choose "Create a New Application" link to first create a user name and password and login. A blank application page will appear where all required fields must be filled. You will be asked to submit a Cover Letter, a NIH Biosketch, CV and Research Plan as pdf files only. The Research Plan must be limited to 3 pages. In addition, you must also arrange to have three letters of recommendation submitted through the web (see below). Once your initial application is submitted, you will be assigned an ID number that you should keep for your records. After the initial submission, you may revise your application or submit documents at anytime until the application deadline by choosing "Update Existing Application." You will also be able to check the status of your application to see if it is complete (see below). You will receive an e-mail confirming that your application has been submitted successfully.

Update an Existing Application:

To update a pre-existing application, from the "Apply to the Program" page choose the "Update Existing Application" link and login with your user name and password. Your current application containing all of the existing information will be displayed. You may update any field you wish. When you submit, your application file will be updated with the latest input information. You will receive an e-mail confirming that your application has been updated successfully. Note that applications may be reviewed as soon as all required elements are received. We therefore encourage you to submit your documents in their final format. Updates should be reserved for informing us of accepted manuscripts, awards or grants received, changes in contact information, etc.

How to Arrange for Electronic Submission of Letters of Recommendation

After you register and submit your application materials you will receive an e-mail confirmation that will also contain a link which you can forward to your letter authors that will allow them to submit your letter directly to your file.

Alternatively, the authors of the letters may submit them by choosing the "Submit a Recommendation Letter " link on the BSSP homepage. However letter submission by this method requires that you first provide the authors your BSSP ID number.

Letters must be submitted in a pdf format only. After submission of each letter, both you and the letter’s author will receive an e-mail confirming that the letter has been submitted successfully.

Check the Status of your Application:

To check the status of your application, from the "Apply to the Program" page choose the "Check Status of Application" link and login with your user name and password. You will be shown a list of items currently in your file. The files will not be accessible or readable. Information about the outcome of the review of your application will not be available on-line, but will be communicated to you separately.
