The Office of Research has a long history of supporting the research mission of the University of Michigan Medical School. Advances in biomedical science are occurring at a rapid pace. The recent expansion of knowledge in genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, nanotechnology, and stem cell biology are examples of these advances. A key next step is translating these advances into solutions that improve human health and wellbeing. This makes for exciting and challenging times in biomedical research.
Our Mission
The Office of Research mission is to foster an environment of innovation and efficiency that serves the University of Michigan Medical School research community and supports biomedical science from insight to impact.
Our goal is to drive, manage, and innovate key research functions and processes to enhance UMMS's standing as a leading academic medical research enterprise. To achieve this objective, our team strives to:
- Create and maintain strategic resources to enhance investigators' competitiveness for funding.
- Accelerate biomedical research to improve human health by diversifying funding resources through strategic partnerships.
- Streamline research processes for increased quality, efficiency, productivity, and faculty satisfaction.
- Build an investigator-focused, centralized infrastructure to support high-quality research.
- Develop and cultivate service-oriented, customer-centric culture through creating value and a consistent identity.

| Steven L. Kunkel, Ph.D. Senior Associate Dean for Research, Dr. Kunkel is the Endowed Professor of Pathology Research and co-director of General Pathology in the Department of Pathology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Kansas in microbiology and served his post-doctoral fellowsphip at the University of Connecticut Health Center.
