Job Opening for Director of the Center for Organogenesis at the University of Michigan

    About the Center

The center was founded in 1995 and has experienced significant success in carrying out its mission and goals, which is to understand the basic mechanisms by which organs and tissues are formed and maintained and to use this knowledge to create long lasting artificial organs, stem cell therapies or organ transplantation systems that will correct genetic and acquired diseases.

The center plays an important role in facilitating research, teaching at the undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels, and in establishing and maintaining a number of important core lab facilities. By its very nature the CFO is a cross-university organization and has membership from a variety of University colleges and schools as well as from both basic science and clinical departments in the medical school. Its graduate student teaching functions are fostered by a long-standing and successful NIH training grant.

The Director will work with scientists to develop innovative methods that assist with the basic mechanisms of organogenesis. The Director will also collaborate with multi-disciplinary project teams.

The optimal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with faculty and administrative staff in multiple University and UMHS departments, divisions and centers to foster collaborative research activities. The individual would join an interdisciplinary group of independent investigators and have the opportunity to pursue research in the context of a large and expanding, multi-specialty health care system

    Candidate Requirements

The candidate must have strong leadership skills and the ability to build teamwork and develop critical scientists within multiple departments of the Medical School. A proven ability to think broadly, and to evaluate and implement new ideas and techniques is essential. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral/written communication skills, plus the ability to function in a dynamic, collaborative environment are required.

Interested candidates should submit a CV and a letter of intent that includes the reasons for interest in the position and a summary of qualifications that would qualify the candidate for the position. These documents should be submitted to Suzanne Weintraub, Medical School Dean's Office June 12, 2009.
