Uganda Project: Collaboration with UM Medical School and Ross School of Business

Project description:

Much of the effort in international health is through technological development and vertically-oriented public health or governmental programs.  There has not been as much attention on delivery systems. The project is a joint effort between the UM Medical School and the UM Ross School of Business to help not-for-profit hospitals in emerging markets to reorganize so that they can become independent of donor funding. Currently, the effort has begun with 2 hospitals in Uganda but the plan is to develop a network of participating hospitals in several countries that can serve as a clearinghouse of information for researchers and a facile vehicle for communication between participating hospitals.

Most recently, a team of seven from the UM traveled to Kumi Hospital in Kumi, Uganda in order to help the hospital reorganize to become a center of excellence in orthopedics and rehabilitation.  Formerly, Kumi Hospital was a leprosarium and, as such, had a history of working with patients with disabilities. Currently, it is a full service hospital but with a high volume of orthopedic cases.  The team is helping the hospital extend its mission beyond that of just acute orthopedics and to include full service rehabilitation services - - a model essentially non-existent in sub-Saharan Africa.

Gift Account: Supporting the Global Minimally Invasive Surgery Training Program

In July, 2008, a group of physicians led by Arnie Advincula, MD and Jonathan Finks, MD, from the University of Michigan, traveled to Ghana, Africa to teach basic laparoscopic surgical skills to Ghanaian gynecologists and surgeons. During a week long course, they gave talks on the basic principles and physiology of laparoscopic surgery. They also taught basic skills using simulators and proctored laparoscopic procedures in the operating room. This course is part of an ongoing post-graduate training program in Ghana that was started in 1986 by Dr. Timothy Johnson, Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan. Drs. Advincula and Finks are working closely with physicians in Ghana to help develop a minimally invasive surgery program at the main teaching hospital in Accra, Ghana.

The Department of Surgery has set up a gift account to support the Global Minimally Invasive Surgery Training Program and all funds collected for this purpose are deposited into this account. If you would like to make a donation, make sure your donor check indicates what project the money is for so that it can be properly identified. (LINK TO BE PROVIDED ONCE ACCOUNT IS SET UP)
