Congratulations to Tanya Wansom who has been chosen to be featured in a National Library of Medicine exhibit that opened Tuesday night, April 15, 2008 in Bethesda, Maryland. Tanya was nominated by her peers to be featured as a student in the exhibit, which will run for two years (both online and at the actual library). This is an outstanding honor as there are only a handful of students featured.
The name of the exhibit is "Against the Odds: Making A Difference in Global Health." She is currently the featured columnist as the website went live Tuesday, May 15, 2008. Tanya will also participate in a panel as part of the opening at the National Library of Medicine on Wednesday, April 16 where she will have the opportunity to speak to around 250 local area students who will be some of the first visitors to the exhibit. The press release for the exhibit is also available for viewing.

A group of medical students has come forward to form Student Alliance
Global REACH, an organization working to expand the opportunities for
learning about and participating in international work during the four
years of medical school. They can be reached at greach_exec@umich.edu.

Medical Student and Resident Exchanges
To date, the University of Michigan Medical School has
not had a formal mechanism in place to assist medical students and residents
who decide they would like to pursue an international rotation. The students
who have done international rotations have done so on an individual basis.
Global REACH would like to change that by identifying an individual to serve as International
Rotation Coordinator within the Medical School who would assist
with placement, housing, and finding funding for students interested
in rotating abroad.
We have developed a comprehensive database
of international contacts by combining data from the following sources:
- a medical student survey that collects contacts made
during previous international rotations;
- an annual faculty survey that collects locations where
UMMS faculty have contacts and are willing to facilitate rotations;
and
- an international alumni mailing that collects information
from UMMS alumni living internationally who are willing to facilitate
international rotations.
These data are collapsed into a searchable database
that is on the web for medical students and residents to access
in researching their international rotations. Please log in here!
In addition, here are some suggestions for
working with Global REACH to identify international rotation opportunities, as well as some recommended reading.
