Research, Education and Collaboration in Health

Our Staff

Dr. David SternDavid Stern, MD, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Medical Education at the University of Michigan and Director of Global REACH (Global Research, Education, and Collaboration in Health). Dr. Stern’s research interests include international health and medical education, physician professionalism, patient-physician communication, and methods for assessing physician behavior. As Director of Global REACH, he is currently leading the assessment for a project funded by the Institute for International Medical Education to develop and implement an assessment of core competencies of physicians-in-training at the top 8 medical schools in China. He also is actively engaged in developing international collaborations and facilitating rotations for the medical school’s faculty, residents, and students.

Cheryl A. Moyer, MPH, is a Senior Research Associate and Research Director at Global REACH. Ms. Moyer’s interests include quality of life (QOL) research, outcomes research, instrument development, research methodology, and patient-provider communication. Ms. Moyer’s responsibilities at Global REACH include identifying research opportunities, writing grants, and directing ongoing research projects. One example of Ms. Moyer’s current projects involves working with collaborators in China to assess faculty development needs of Chinese medical educators. Ms. Moyer has been Research Director of Global REACH since its inception.

Kate Durand is Global REACH's Administrator and handles the day-to-day operations and develops and manages the GR budget. She provides resources, orientation, and information to all medical students seeking international experiences, whether it's for an M4 international rotation or an M1/M2 humanitarian project. Kate is the liaison with Student Alliance for Global REACH, the medical student division of Global REACH and the Medical School. She works with students each year to develop the Student Alliance annual fund raising calendar which includes photos from humanitarian trips. Kate is an avid promoter of the contributions medical students make to developing countries during their time in medical school. International students seeking to do electives at UMMS work with Kate for the proper resources and opportunities. She is also the contact for student funding information, whether it be for conference attendance or international trips. She also works with departments requesting to sponsor international visitors for a period of study or a presentation to staff or faculty. Kate promotes good relationships between the international schools, faculty, and students that participate in international experiences.

Sarah Rominski, MPH, is a Research Associate with Global REACH and a recent graduate of the University of Michigan School of Public Health where she earned her degree from the department of Health Management and Policy. Some of her current research activities include investigating differential IUD usage worldwide and working on a cross-university project with Ghanaian partners to scale-up healthcare delivery in that country.

Nicole Kubon, worked as work study for Global REACH sinceJune 07 and has recently graduated from U of M. She is currently our Office Assistant and will be starting grad school at the U in the fall.

Nicole handles many of our accounting processes from Pcard, to travel advances and travel expense reports. She arranges meetings and luncheons and helps students with ordering for special student lectures. She manages the student gift account where all the students fundraising dollars are deposited for future trips.
