                         University of Michigan Medical School

During the past decade, the Medical School has witnessed a surge in student and faculty interest in global health issues. As of our most recent tally, we had nearly 350 faculty members who reported international connections in more than 100 countries. Coinciding with this increased interest are enormous opportunities for extramural funding, including grant opportunities from the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), NIH’s Fogarty Center, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Global Fund, the World Bank, USAID, and others. Yet fundable proposals require pilot data, established connections, and preliminary evidence of the likelihood of success.

To that end, Global REACH, together with the Associate Deans of Research and Graduate Studies, announce the availability of three $15,000 grants for UMMS faculty to pursue international research, education, or collaboration efforts.

Objectives:

The objectives of these planning grants are for faculty to:

  • establish relationships that will lead to future collaborative efforts in research or education

  • to explore potential partnerships that will provide mutually beneficial outcomes for UMMS and the partner institution

  • gather enough information to submit a larger grant within a year of the expiration of these planning grants

The expected outcome of this planning grant will be an NIH/Fogarty Center or other international research grant proposal.

Individuals Eligible to Become Principal Investigators

Any individual with an MD or PhD who has a faculty appointment in the Medical School is eligible to apply.
