Application & Instructions
All medical students seeking student financial aid assistance must file the following:
Please read this section carefully!!
If you wish to be considered for ALL types of aid, federal as well as institutional loans and grants, you MUST provide parental information on the FAFSA form. Parental information is not necessary if you are only applying for the William D. Ford Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans and the Grad PLUS Loan. For institutional funds, the University of Michigan Medical School adheres to the premise that the family bears the first responsibility to contribute toward college expenses to the extent that they are able to do so, therefore parental data is required even though you are considered an independent student. This may seem contrary to the basic FAFSA instructions, but is mandatory for Department of Health and Human Services Programs (i.e. PCL, LDS, SDS) as well as institutional funds. This information will not jeopardize your eligibility for the William D. Ford Federal Direct Stafford or Grad PLUS Loan Programs.
When completing the FAFSA or the Renewal FAFSA on the Web, keep the following points in mind:
- You CANNOT file the FAFSA or Renewal Application (paper
or web-based version) prior to January 1
- You (and your parents, if applicable) MUST have completed
federal income tax forms BEFORE completing the FAFSA or Renewal Application
version
- Do NOT use estimated income information
- Complete the FAFSA on
the Web Worksheet BEFORE completing the FAFSA or
Renewal FAFSA on the Web
- Be sure you have listed the University of Michigan Medical School so
we receive a set of official results. Our Federal School Code
is E00398.
- If you do not already have one, we recommend that you apply for a PIN
at www.pin.ed.gov. With a PIN you
will be able to electronically sign your application as well as make any
necessary corrections to your submitted application.
- Keep copies!!
Paper versions of the FAFSA and the Medical School Financial Aid Application are available if you are unable to complete them on the Web. You may request paper copies by contacting our office.
