Basic Sciences Programs and Services

Lab workersUnder the direction of Katrina Ward Hope, this office provides administrative staff support to all Basic Science units, departments and programs. This office manages program initiatives for the basic sciences, provides administrative consultation to faculty and staff on operational financial issues, serves as the primary contact for issues regarding the Life Sciences Institute, and provides staff support to the Endowment for the sciences units and programs in the Medical School, to promote a work environment that encourages collaboration innovation and creativity.

Business and Regulatory Analysis

The Medical School Office of Business and Regulatory Analysis is responsible for coordinating efforts for contracting, compliance, conflict of interest and various business, regulatory and legal issues within the Dean's Office, with Deborah Biggs serving as director and compliance officer for the Medical School. Various committees are managed by the office related to these functions, including the Medical School Compliance Committee and Conflict of Interest Board. Many programs and projects from the Dean's Office are also directed or coordinated by contracting, regulatory and legal affairs, including the Healthcare Leadership Institute's Leadership Development Program, Medical School Executive Incentive Compensation Program, Professional Liability request process, Outside Employment Disclosure process, and eResearch Conflict of Interest Ancillary Committee review. Facilities Management and Planning

PictureThe Office of Medical School Facilities Management and Planning, under the direction of Horace Bomar, has oversight responsibility for all day-to-day operations and maintenance issues within Medical School buildings. All facilities-related issues and problems should be directed to the Facilities Office. Facilities Management and Planning is also responsible for the initiation and coordination of all physical facility planning, renovation and new construction on the Medical School campus, and space management. Other areas of responsibility include mail delivery services, materiel management services, and coordination with campus service providers including Public Safety and Security, Occupational Safety and Environmental Health, Plant Operations, and Plant Extension.

Financial Services

The Financial Services Office, under the direction of David Mohr, director of Financial Services, is responsible for all financial activities of the Medical School including forecasting, financial planning, capital financing, business plans, cost accounting, financial analysis, annual and special audits, development and maintenance of internal accounting controls, and financial accounting and reporting. Grant Review & Analysis Office

The Grants Review & Analysis Office, led by Heather Offhaus, director, is responsible for reviewing all Medical School proposals requesting funds from external sponsors for research-related activities and all material transfer agreements for compliance with sponsor, University and Medical School policies. The office is available to provide advice and guidance on research policies and funding. Additionally, the office is responsible for analysis of NIH and all other external sponsor submission and award research trends for the school, department, and faculty. Human Resources and Staff Development

Medical School human resource programs and activities for non-instructional employees are coordinated by the Human Resources and Staff Development Office directed by Judy Hallberg. This office provides a variety of human resource (HR) services to enhance the personal effectiveness, technical knowledge, and leadership skill of employees and managers in the School. HR services include staff development programs, compensation systems and programs, new employee orientation, and employee communications. In addition, this office provides support and advice to managers and employees on individual and workforce issues and ensures compliance with HR policy and state and federal laws.

Medical School Communications

The Medical School Communications team supports the education and research missions of the U-M Medical School. The team works closely with the Health System's Office of Public Relations & Marketing Communications, which focuses on clinical research and patient care. Medical School Communications focus is internal and external communications support and strategy for the Medical School. It does this by developing and disseminating strategic messages to keep internal and external audiences informed and to increase visibility for the School. Under the direction of Kallie Bila Michels, services include media relations, Web development, marketing communications, writing and internal communications expertise. Medical School Communications is responsible for E-News and contributes School news to the Health System's publications Inside View and Applause. Medical School Information Services

Medical School Information Services (MSIS), directed by Glenn Hiller, supports a wide variety of information technology needs for the Medical School. Services include administrative information systems, professional billing, and managed care applications to meet the business needs of Medical School Administration including Faculty Group Practice, support for the Learning Resource Center, and network infrastructure services. Network infrastructure services include desktop hardware and software, network file storage, database support, and application hosting.
