Academic Overview with the Dean

The University of Michigan Medical School is a great, but complex, institution and to help you navigate through the complexity we instituted a yearly Academic Overview with the Dean. The date is Friday, July 1, 2011 at Palmer Commons, Great Lakes Room. This will run from 8:30 in the morning until about 3:00 in the afternoon including lunch. The aim is not to instruct you on day-to-day functions, but rather to orient you to the history, culture, and academic issues of the Medical School. This will be a chance to meet your entry cohort of faculty across all disciplines. You will learn some things that are not readily available through other avenues. We really hope that you will be able to make the preparations to join us. The Dean and Associate Dean for Faculty have made, and will make, numerous requests to your chairs and unit heads to free you up completely for this important touch point in your career. Please join us for this event.

For more information, please contact the Faculty Affairs Office at 763-0253.

Fitzbutler Jones Medical Society

Representing the achievements of African-American medical students at the University of Michigan, past and present, the last names of William Henry Fitzbutler (M.D. 1872) and Sophia Bethena Jones (M.D. 1885) were chosen in 1997 for the establishment of the Fitzbutler Jones Society, an organization of African-Americans who are graduates of the University of Michigan Medical School or completed residency training programs at Michigan. The mission is to provide African-American medical students and alumni/ae of the University of Michigan Medical School with financial support and opportunities for professional development by serving as mentors and encouraging philanthropy for both expendable and endowed scholarship funds. By promoting the education and training of African-American physicians and medical scientists and by thus advancing the medical research and clinical care they will provide during their careers, they also hope to ultimately improve the health of all African-Americans.

An annual dinner hosted by the Dean is given each year to acknowledge the recipients, recent donors, and the members of the society for their contributions. For more information, please contact Diversity and Career Development Office at 764-8185.

For more information on giving to the Fitzbutler Jones Society, please contact B. J. Bess in the Office of Medical Development and Alumni Relations at 998-6044 or email at
