MEDICAL SCHOOL EMERITUS FACULTY PROGRAM
The Medical School Emeritus Program offers opportunities for medical school
emeritus faculty to continue to provide their assistance, experience, and
leadership to the Medical School. Activities for emeritus faculty that are currently being explored include the following:
Medical Student Education and Mentoring

Participate in a sequence in the M1/M2 year in conjunction with the course
director (typically two weeks).

Provide peer review/consultation of an M1/M2 sequence (Monitor the course, attend the sessions, review the exams, and meet with the
students and teachers)
- Provide correlation between basic science and clinical practice
- Participate in M3/M4 teaching (arranged within the department)

Provide clinical correlation for an M1 basic science sequence
(case conferences and assisting with small group sessions)

Provide instruction and bedside teaching in Clinical Foundations of Medicine with Classical Findings
session (usually Thurs/Friday in specific domains: Cardio, Pulm, GI, MSK,
Neuro were suggested)

Help instruct in clinical refresher programs for students who need this -
specifically Medical Scientist Training Program (before entering M3 year) and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) students (before
returning to Clinical Foundations of Medicine in late M1 year)
Graduate Students, Resident and Faculty Mentoring

Participation in resident education and career mentoring.

Join the Faculty Mentoring Program in the Office of Faculty and Faculty Development

Be available to new faculty for advice, counsel, and career mentoring.
Some of these activities are organized at the department level by the chair
and the program director and include commitments ranging from individual meetings to
yearlong participation.
Emeritus Research Activities

Participate in university activities related to research at the University of Michigan,
emphasizing support systems, balancing clinical practice and research, and
experience with unique opportunities in the University
(e.g. Institutional Review Board, University Committee on Use and Care of Animals, etc.).
Emeritus Faculty Program Events
- Social and scientific meetings of the emeritus faculty
- Occasional meetings with the Medical School Deans and Hospital Administration
- Meetings with faculty nearing retirement
Medical Center Alumni Society (MCAS)/Development Office

Participate in alumni activities and fund raising efforts in conjunction with
the MCAS Development office. This may involve contacting classmates, meeting
with individual donors, maintaining the medical school Hall of Fame, and other
activities.
