Ezekiel EmanuelEzekiel Emanuel, a key figure in Obama's administration, will be the keynote speaker at a University of Michigan symposium focusing on "A New Era in Medicine." His presentation will look at the future of the physician-patient relationship. Also speaking are U-M medical researchers working on new techniques for clinical treatment for disease.

The symposium will begin at 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 16, in the Towsley Center Dow Auditorium. For more information or to register, visit the Web site.

The symposium is jointly sponsored by U-M's A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute and Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research.

Funds available for subsidized use of U-M research resource cores for problems in aging research
The Nathan Shock Center for the Biology of Aging announces the availability of subsidy funds to help U-M faculty members purchase services from the University's family of research resource cores. The funds can be used to help pay a portion (40%) of costs at any U-M core that has published user fees or recharge rates. Some examples of these cores include, among others:

  • Center for Integrative Genomics
  • Metabolomics and Obesity Center
  • Protein Structure Facility
  • DNA Sequencing Core
  • Center for Molecular Imaging
  • Center for Chemical Genomics
  • Affymetrix and DNA Microarray Core
  • shRNA Library Core

The research project must address questions related to the physiology, cell biology, genetics or molecular biology of aging. For detailed information, visit "Funding Info. For Use of U-M Research Cores" .

Clinical Research Pricing Tool Demonstrations
The Medical School Office of Research is pleased to announce the launch of the Clinical Research Pricing Tool, an online application to assist clinical researchers and staff in obtaining research prices for tests and procedures needed for efficient preparation of accurate budgets for their studies. Both hospital and professional fees at federal and non-federal research discounted rates are now available online in a single location. To introduce you to this new tool, we are hosting two training demonstrations Wednesday, Oct. 14 and Friday, Oct. 23. For times and locations and to register for a session, please visit the registration form. For questions about these demonstration sessions, e-mail Kathryn Ridner at kridner@umich.edu or call 734-763-4086.

UMHS guidelines now online to help physicians coordinate care for UMHS patients
Physician teams across UMHS have created nearly 500 Consult Request Guidelines to help physicians coordinate care for patients across UMHS. They're all available on www2.med.umich.edu/umaccess or via a link on the Clinical Home page under Clinical References.

Thousands of Web users a month are now accessing them -- both U-M clinicians and referring physicians from the community. These guidelines provide suggested pre-referral work-ups or courses of therapy and include Web links to patient education materials and information on U-M specialists. If you have suggestions for additional consult request guidelines, please e-mail consultguidelines@umich.edu

Oct. 9: Semester test of alert system
The semester test of the U-M Emergency Alert system is expected to be conducted mid-day Friday, Oct. 9, although this test may be cancelled without notice, we anticipate sending only one message with this test. Don't get locked out! Renew your ID badge today
What's one of the top reasons why people get locked out of Medical School buildings after business hours? They didn't notice that their U-M ID card expiration date has passed, so the card reader wouldn't let them in.

Don't let this happen to you: check the front of your card today to see when it expires. If your date is approaching, take your ID badge to the UMHS Key ID office, located on the ground floor of the Med Inn building, for a quick renewal,  including a new photo of yourself. Any access levels you currently have will automatically renew once your ID badge is renewed. If you have any questions please call the Facilities Office at 734-647-2788 or visit the Key ID Web site at www.med.umich.edu/security/keyid.htm .
