June 26: Jim Randolph retirement open house
The Division of Research Development and Administration and the Michigan Administrative Information Services invite the research community to celebrate the retirement of Jim Randolph. The former senior associate director of DRDA, Randolph has most recently been shepherding the development of the eResearch Proposal Management system for proposal approval and routing. Randolph is well known across campus for his work as the National Institutes of Health liaison and for his promotion of professional research administration. A reception will take place from 3 - 5 p.m. Friday, June 26, in Palmer Common Great Lakes Room South. Remarks will take place at 4 p.m.

June 29: MCIT launches Phase 2 of the UMHS GreenIT program Monday evening
In its continuing effort to improve how UMHS manages its energy resources, MCIT will launch Phase 2 of our GreenIT program on Monday evening, June 29 - after its nightly computer maintenance is completed. In this second of a four phase program, MCIT managed computers will be turned off every night, except for specified areas where exceptions have been authorized. These areas include units that function 24 hours a day, seven days a week, such as the OR, pathology labs, radiology in Mott, University Hospital inpatient care units and ambulatory care examination rooms.

Prior to this Phase 2 change, MCIT managed computers operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. They were designed for this constant operation and UMHS personnel were discouraged from turning
their computers off. UMHS has now modified that policy to reduce consumption of energy resources by shutting off most of the computers during non-operational times. This single change will save $225,000 in annual electricity expense.

Phase 1, which put monitors into a sleep or stand-by mode was successful and resulted in approximately $420,000 in annual savings. Additional innovations are planned for Phase 3 in the fall and for Phase 4 at a later date.

To read the new policy, which explains how to request an exception to the automatic computer shutdown policy, and for details about GreenIT, go to www.med.umich.edu/i/mcit/greenIT. If you have questions, please
contact greenIT@med.umich.edu.
