Remembering Jack Pfeifer, M.D.
Jack PfeiferA funeral took place Monday, June 8, for former U-M vascular surgeon John (Jack) Pfeifer, M.D., who passed away recently.

Pfeifer was a pioneer in vascular surgery and founded the U-M Livonia Vein Center. He retired from practice in October 2007 but was still active in the mentoring of the Vein Center's current physicians, Emily Cummings, M.D., and Lisa Pavone, M.D. Pfeifer was internationally known for his expertise and passion for vascular surgery, but also for his endearing personality. His staff and colleagues looked up to him and thoroughly enjoyed working with him. He will be missed by all.

Now accepting applications for 2009-2010 learning opportunity -- Faculty Scholars Program in Integrative Health care
The Faculty Scholars program provides an opportunity for U-M faculty to explore the broad field of integrative health care with a diverse group of colleagues. The FSP involves 10 full days per month (typically third Friday) and three half days of learning scheduled throughout the academic year. Scholars are mentored in the design of an individual curriculum, research or clinical service application project of their own passion related to integrative health. To date, 60 faculty have completed the program with outstanding evaluations. A list of FSP alumni and titles of projects is available at the Integrative Medicine Web site. CME credit for physicians has been provided.

The FSP will accept 8 - 12 academic faculty from a mix of U-M departments, schools, and colleges. Upon acceptance, a $750 program tuition fee will be required. For more information, e-mail Rita Benn, Ph.D. at ritabenn@umich.edu. For application materials, e-mail barjohns@umich.edu.

Policy Updates
Family and Friends Presence/Visitation Policy - 03-07-021. This new policy pertains to all U-M Hospitals and Health Centers and specifies that it is the patient who determines who the members of his or her family are and who can visit. This does not preclude individual hospitals/departments/units from placing restrictions on visitation.

Sentinel and Serious Adverse Event Review Process Policy 03-07-004. This policy was recently revised. The most significant changes are that all serious adverse events must be reviewed within 90 calendar days from incident identification and all action plans must be implemented within 180 days of action plan identification.

New LASA Medication Policy 07-01-008. Drug names can often sound or appear similar, and products can look similar enough to cause confusion. A new policy was developed to address UMHS strategies to prevent errors with LASA-medications including Tall man lettering to help distinguish drug names, automation when feasible (i.e., Omnicell machines and UM-CareLink) and storage of LASA medications.
