U-M researchers awarded $61.1 million in federal stimulus funds
On Monday, the University of Michigan announced that 159 federal stimulus-package research grants have been received so far, totaling $61.1 million. This includes 113 National Institutes of Health stimulus awards that totaled $21.1 million, mostly for U-M Medical School researchers. In recent years, our Medical School faculty has been successful in obtaining government funding for many projects despite a general slowdown in federal funding for health research. These new stimulus funds will help us conduct research to solve medical challenges and bring our innovations from lab to bedside more quickly.

For more information on opportunities still available for funding, please visit the Health System's stimulus site at www.med.umich.edu/u/recovery/ .The press release is available online.

The Medpedia Project is now open to house officers and faculty members
Medpedia is a worldwide program for sharing and advancing medical knowledge. Michigan, Harvard, Stanford and Berkeley have partnered with Medpedia to develop this site.

Michigan is encouraging our faculty, fellows and house officers to become Medpedia contributors. Authors can write their own articles or contribute to those already written. All contributions are tracked by Medpedia and are credited to authors for inclusion in their CVs.

The Medical School sees Medpedia as a novel venue for our faculty and house officers to contribute to medical knowledge. Since contributors can choose their level of participation, Medpedia is a unique opportunity for busy clinicians and investigators to become recognized authors of a worldwide medical resource.

You can learn more about Medpedia at: www.medpedia.com/sign-up-information/professionals. If you have specific questions about Medpedia at UMHS, e-mail medpediaproject@umich.edu.

Biomedical engineering course needs M.D. volunteers -- minimal time commitment required
We're looking for physicians to act as clients for our freshman introduction to biomedical engineering course. The total time commitment is only 10 - 15 hours. To give students a real-world experience, teams of five-six students are assigned to a U-M physician client to identify a disease which could benefit from a novel, pre-symptomatic diagnostic test. It can be multi-stage, use both genotypic and/or phenotypic technologies, apply current methods like Western blots and PCR or emerging technologies like nanosystems or camera pills. Physicians would be required to meet with their student team three times during Sept. - Oct. to answer questions and provide guidance via e-mail. If interested, please e-mail Mary Beth Donovan at mbdon@umich.edu.

Sept. 8: Writing quiz questions that really work -- an MLearning workshop

Find out how to analyze your quiz performance, question by question. The workshop will take place from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, in the MCHC Auditorium.
