In 2008, the Staff Awards Program was expanded to up to 12 annual awards in three categories: managerial, professional and support. The top awardee in each category will receive a check for $1,500 and an invitation to attend the Annual Faculty and Staff Awards Banquet. Up to three “honorable mention” awardees will be named in each award category. Each honoree will receive a check for $500. A selection committee will help identify awardees representing all components of the Medical School mission:
“The mission of the U-M Medical School is to educate students, physicians, and biomedical scholars and to provide a spectrum of comprehensive knowledge, research, patient care and service of the highest quality to the people of the state of Michigan and beyond.”

Save the Date: Medical Education Day is June 2 Abstract submission deadline: Friday, May 1 The keynote address for Medical Education Day 2009 will be presented by Geoff Norman, Ph.D., professor of clinical epidemiology and biostatistics and assistant dean for Educational Research and Development at McMaster University, Hampton, Ontario. Norman's lecture, "The Role of Experience in the Development of Medical Diagnostic Expertise" will begin at noon Tuesday, June 2, in the MCHC Auditorium, followed by a panel discussion. Poster presentations, computer demonstrations and a reception will take place from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. in the Towsley Center Lobby. For more information, visit the Web site.
U-M Emergency Alert system will be tested Friday, April 3 The periodic test of the U-M Emergency Alert system is planned for mid-day on Friday, April 3. It is anticipated that two messages will be sent to those who have registered to receive alerts: an initial test message followed an hour later by an “all clear.” This test may be canceled without notice.
If you aren't yet signed up to receive U-M Emergency Alerts, which use text messages, e-mail and voicemail messages to give urgent information about major campus emergencies, consider signing up now at http://www.umemergencyalert.umich.edu/ . Use the "Register" link on the left side of the page and follow the instructions to register via Wolverine Access.
When the U-M Department of Public Safety determines there is an active emergency that may put the public safety of the campus at risk, it will initiate an urgent Emergency Alert. At that time, more information and incident updates will be posted on the U-M Department of Public Safety Web site as information becomes available.

April 8: Geriatrics Center annual research retreat The Geriatrics Center annual research symposium will take place from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, in the Biomedical Science Research Building seminar room 1130. U-M researchers will give short talks and present posters.
The keynote speaker will feature Thomas A. Rando, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor, department of neurology and neurological sciences, Stanford University School of Medicine, chief, Neurology Services, VA Palo Alto Health Care System and department director, Stanford Center on Longevity. Global REACH International Faculty Seed Grant RFP Application Deadline: 5 p.m. Friday, May 1 Global REACH, together with the senior associate dean for research, Steven Kunkel, Ph.D., and the interim director of Global Reach, Timothy Johnson, M.D., is pleased to announce the availability of four $10,000 grants for medical school faculty to pursue international research, education or collaboration efforts. The Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research "Partners for Healthy Communities" Symposium and walking dinner will take place from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Monday, May 11, in Palmer Commons. April 23: MacDonell Lectureship and addiction psychiatry update
The MacDonell Lectureship will take place from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in the Rachel Upjohn Building auditorium and conference room. The event is sponsored by the University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry, substance abuse section. The theme of the event is "Pharmacotherapy and Psychosocial Techniques for the Treatment of Alcoholism and Other Substance Abuse Disorders in Adolescents." The morning session includes three presentations and the afternoon session features workshops regarding multisystemic therapy and brief intervention techniques. Welcome Carrie Ashton to the Offices of Global REACH! We are very pleased and excited to announce that Carrie Ashton has joined the offices of Global REACH as Medical School International Visitors Coordinator, effective March 23. Carrie is now in charge of all incoming international students and dignitaries. In addition to managing our international visitors she will work with Medical School departments that request assistance with their visitors. This includes travel, visa, and housing arrangements; visitor orientation, and tours; itineraries; and managing international dignitary visits. Black Medical Student Association receives NAACP Image Award The Black Medical Student Association was the recipient of an NAACP
Image Award from the University of Michigan student chapter of the
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The award
was given at the Second Annual Image Awards Banquet held on Sunday,
March 29, 2009 in the Michigan Union Ballroom. BMA won in the category
of Outstanding Graduate Student Organization. The nominating and
voting is done by U-M undergraduate students. The criteria was based
on outstanding commitment to the student body and the community. This
was the only graduate student category; the other categories were
specifically tailored to undergraduate students.
The Black Medical Student Association mentors undergraduate students
and has hosted health fairs in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti community.
Members also serve as student ambassadors representing the U-M Medical
School. Next week, several of the students will be traveling to New
Orleans to attend the Student National Medical Association Conference.

April 9: Donate Life Flag Raising April is National Donate Life month. The University of Michigan Health System is joining the national campaign to encourage organ donor registration. A Donate Life flag raising ceremony will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 9, at University Hospital main entrance flagpole. Faculty and staff are invited to attend. The event should take no longer than 30 minutes.
This month we are encouraging hospital employees to consider joining the Michigan Donor Registry. Donor registry drives will take place Monday, April 13 - Thursday, April 16, in the Towsley Link and University Hospital cafeteria. Take 30 seconds to save up to eight lives by joining the Michigan Donor Registry.

Life Sciences Orchestra concert April 26, featuring Beethoven's 9th The U-M Life Sciences Orchestra will perform a free concert at Hill Auditorium at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 26. The concert, which closes out the LSO's ninth season of blending art and science, will feature Beethoven's spectacular Ninth Symphony, with its famous "Ode to Joy" finale. Also on the program: a violin solo by University of Michigan physician Michael Hsu, M.D., and a composition for brass by Gabrielli.
The free concert, which is open to the public, will begin with remarks by Health System CEO Robert Kelch, M.D. In addition to the LSO, the Beethoven symphony will feature a special choir that consists of faculty, staff and students from the U-M's health, medical and life sciences that was created for this concert.

April 21: Celebrate Administrative Professionals Week All U-M administrative office professionals are invited to celebrate Administrative Professionals Week from 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in the Biomedical Science Research Building Auditorium. The event, hosted by UM-Association of Administrative Office Professionals, includes a networking lunch and visit with local vendors. Laurita Thomas, associate vice president and chief of human resources, will be the opening speaker, followed by a presentation, certified trainer and "hilarious" motivational speaker, Richard Paul. The UM-AAOP third annual Award of Excellence winner will also be announced.
