April 17: Attend Dean Woolliscroft's office hours program
James WoolliscroftSince beginning the "office hours" program, Dean Woolliscroft has met informally with many faculty, staff and students who have provided him with valuable comments and suggestions on how to enhance our efforts and make a great school even better. Below are the days, times and locations for office hours in the coming month. Faculty, staff and students are invited to stop by with their creative ideas and innovative solutions:

  • 1 - 2 p.m. Friday, April 17, in the Cardiovascular Center room 2738
  • 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, in the Biomedical Science Research Building seminar room A

April 20: A View from the Capitol with Michigan Senator Tom George, M.D.
Tom GeorgeMichigan Senator Tom George, M.D., comes to the University of Michigan School of Public Health to share his ideas on improving Michigan's health at 4 p.m. Monday, April 20, in the U-M School of Public Health, at 109 Observatory.

George serves as chair of the State Senate Health Policy Committee. He has significant influence on how Michigan will spend its budget on health care delivery and training. The event is hosted by the Griffith Leadership Center in Health Management and Policy. An open reception will follow the presentation.

April 28: 'Try Our NCIBI Tools' Workshop
The National Center for Integrative Biomedical Informatics (NCIBI) will hold a "Try Our NCIBI Tools" Workshop from 1 - 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, in the Great Lakes Rooms, Palmer Commons. This workshop will give you an opportunity to learn our applications with guided instruction. Any basic and/or clinical scientists who are interested in biomedical informatics, computational biology, and the application of tools to complex biological problems should attending. May 4 - 5: MICHR Education Presents 'Clinical Research Education Workshop'
The Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research Education will host a "Clinical Research Education Workshop" on Monday, May 4, and Tuesday, May 5. Topics covered include:

  • The drug development process
  • Principal investigator responsibilities
  • FDA regulations in clinical research
  • ICH guidelines for good clinical practice
  • Clinical research protocols
  • Understanding adverse events
  • Source documentation
  • Essential documents
  • Non-compliance, fraud and FDA suspension
  • Completing the case report form/data collection
  • Many more

May 14 - 15: 13th Annual Nathan Shock Center Research Retreat
Nathan Shock Center for the Biology of Aging: Annual Research Retreat will take place Thursday, May 14, and Friday, May 15, in the Biomedical Science Research Building. Internationally known biogerontologists will explore recent, and possible discoveries likely to provide new directions and unexpected momentum for research in the biology of aging in the coming five to 10 years. Keynote lecturers include:

  • Andrzej Bartke, Ph.D., Southern Illinois School of Medicine
  • Matt Kaeberlein, Ph.D., University of Washington

RefWorks Basics

Noon - 1 p.m. Thursday, April 16
RefWorks is a free, web-based tool for managing citations and creating bibliographies. In this introductory class, we'll cover the basics, including how to create a RefWorks account and your own database of references; how to import references electronically from online resources, such as UM-MedSearch, PubMed, and Mirlyn; and how to automatically insert citations and generate formatted bibliographies in a Word document.

Introduction to iGoogle
Noon - 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 21
iGoogle is a useful tool for both the general purpose users who want to organize their lives and experts in a variety of domains. Customized tools are available for purposes from calendars to dieting and workouts all the way through protein modeling and high end tools for life science researchers. You can even use iGoogle to organize your favorite journal table of contents and PubMed search strategy updates.

Announcing the new Family Helpers program from Work/Life Resource
The Work/Life Resource Center is pleased to announce the new Family Helpers program that connects U-M students interested in occasional employment with staff and faculty who are in need of a variety of assistance. Family Helpers lists students interested in providing assistance, such as:

  • Occasional child care
  • Occasional care for elderly or disabled relatives
  • Pet sitting
  • House sitting
  • Gardening/yard work
  • Errands
  • Tutoring
  • Housekeeping/cleaning

You can access the Family Helpers listing online. Students participating in the program are from the School of Nursing, School of Education, School of Art and Design and the Department of Psychology. These listings will be updated twice each year. Note that all negotiations related to occasional employment, including setting an hourly rate, are handled directly between the staff/faculty member and the student. April 24: Health Sciences Libraries' book club
The Health Sciences Libraries' book club will meet at noon Friday, April 24, to discuss Temple Grandin's "Animals Make Us Human."
