Regional Mass Casualty Exercise Planned for Sept. 18
University of Michigan Health System will participate in a region-wide emergency preparedness exercise on Thursday, Sept. 18, which is being conducted by the Southeast Michigan Urban Area Security Initiative, a consortium of multiple agencies, jurisdictions and community partners including health care organizations from southeast Michigan.

The exercise will involve hospitals and hundreds of first responders in southeast Michigan; it will include several emergency scenarios, representing a broad range of potential hazards resulting from terrorist actions. During the exercise, the hospitals will be asked to simulate handling an overwhelming number of admissions caused by the scenarios.

Most of the scenarios will occur in metropolitan Detroit, and UMHS participation will be limited. For the exercise, we will activate our Emergency Operations Center and we will set up two decontamination tents in the Emergency Department parking lots. These tents will be highly visible and may raise questions.  We will also test a new regional software system for tracking patients at multiple hospitals throughout southeast Michigan. Services of our Emergency Department will not be affected by this exercise.
