Oct. 29: Top NIH ethicist compares McCain/Obama health plans How do the health care plans put forth by the leading Presidential candidates compare, especially when it comes to covering the uninsured? What else can be done to fix America's health care system?
The top bioethicist from the National Institutes of Health, Ezekiel Emanuel, M.D., Ph.D., will address these questions and more in the annual Waggoner Lecture on Ethics and Values in Medicine, sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry.
This free, public lecture will be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, Ford Amphitheater, University Hospital. Emanuel directs the Department of Clinical Bioethics at the NIH.
Oct. 31: Clinical Research Training Symposium Plan to join us at the annual Clinical Research Training Symposium from noon - 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, to learn more about the training programs in Clinical and Translational Research offered by the Michigan Institute of Clinical and Health Research. Steven Goldring, M.D., chief scientific officer, Hospital for Special Surgery, will present the keynote address as part of Internal Medicine Grand Rounds at noon in Ford Auditorium. Register Now/Earn CME Credits – Biomedical Research Symposium on 'Image-Guided Therapy' Extended Registration Deadline: Thursday, Nov. 6 (Extended from Oct. 22) This symposium will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 12 from 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. in the Biomedical Science Research Building Auditorium. It will focus on advances that integrate imaging into various therapeutic procedures. Participants will learn about new research findings in the imaging sciences, molecular imaging, and clinical systems for image-guided therapy. Internationally recognized experts will address these topics and describe the challenges and opportunities that lie in cross-disciplinary research and clinical developments. Oct. 29: Pathology Imaging Open House To celebrate our 50th year, the Department of Pathology Imaging Division will host an open house from 9 a.m. - noon and from 1 - 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, in 3233 Med. Sci. 1.
Stop by to learn about all of the services offered, tour the facilities and see photos of pathology imaging throughout the years. Representatives from Zeiss will be on hand to answer any questions you have about microimaging.
Save the date - employee flu shot clinics scheduled Oct. 27 - Nov. 21 Flu season is approaching so plan ahead to get your flu shot. Employee Health Services is hosting flu shot clinics for faculty, staff, medical students, nursing students working in the hospitals and health centers, and volunteers.
To attend one of the following clinics, you must bring your UM ID badge and your blue hospital registration card. Also, please remember you will be receiving the shot in your upper arm so dress appropriately.

Adobe Connect is available at the Medical School
Adobe Connect was recently upgraded to version 7.0 and simultaneously moved from the "pilot" stage to fully implemented at the Medical School. Adobe Connect is a web conferencing system that supports distributed meetings and training sessions with remote participants and using audio, video, desktop sharing, presentations, polling, and many more features. The Office of Enabling Technologies has been running the pilot and provides support for the more than 1200 individual users who are registered to host meetings using this product at the U-M Medical School. Two pages of the Patient Safety Report Form have been eliminated for reporters, making it significantly quicker to file a report
