Oct. 21: John DeLancey to give Dean's Lecture
John O. DeLancey, M.D., Norman F. Miller Collegiate Professor of Gynecology and director of Pelvic Floor Research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology will give the Dean's Lecture at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21. in Dow Auditorium Towsley Center. DeLancey will present "Unspeakable Women's Problems; Imaging, Modeling, Insight and Change." All members of the University community are welcome to attend. Oct. 23: Otto Gago, M.D., Professorship in Cardiac Surgery
James O. Woolliscroft, M.D., dean of the Medical School, cordially invites you to the Thursday, Oct. 23 inauguration of the Otto Gago, M.D., Professorship in Cardiac Surgery and the installation of Francis D. Pagani, M.D., Ph.D., as the first Gago Professor. This event will take place at 4 p.m. in the Danto Auditorium, Cardiovascular Center. Fall faculty meeting vodcast available for online
A vodcast of the fall faculty meeting "Promotion and Tenure: Strategies for Success" is available for viewing on the UMMS faculty Web site. Margaret R. Gyetko, M.D., associate dean for Faculty Affairs, outlined the faculty appointment and promotion process, and gave an overview of the promotion package, as well as provided advice on preparing junior faculty for promotion. Slides from the presentation are also available on the Web site.

Two Faculty elected to Institute of Medicine
The Institute of Medicine announced Monday the election of 65 new members, including University of Michigan Medical School faculty Howard Markel, M.D., Ph.D, director of the Center for the History of Medicine, and Juanita Merchant, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of internal medicine and of molecular and integrative physiology.

The Institute of Medicine has become recognized as a national resource for independent, scientifically informed analyses and recommendations on health issues. Membership in the Institute of Medicine is extended to those who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievements and commitment to service.

Also at the 38th annual meeting, Gilbert S. Omenn, M.D., Ph.D., was presented the Walsh McDermott Medal for distinguished service. Since his election to the IOM in 1979, Omenn, a professor of internal medicine, human genetics and public health and director of the Center for Computational Medicine and Biology, has chaired numerous activities such as the IOM's health care quality initiative.

Oct. 27: The Impact of the Aging of America on Children's Health featuring Gary Freed
Gary L. Freed, M.D., MPH, will present the 2008 Fedele F. and Iris M. Fauri Memorial Lecture at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, in the Educational Conference Center, room 1840, School of Public Health.

Freed is the Percy and Mary Murphy Professor of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine, and professor of health management and policy in the School of Public Health at the U-M. He is director of the U-M Division of General Pediatrics and director of the Children's Health Evaluation and Research Unit. Oct. 29: Department of Pathology Open House
The Department of Pathology open house is planned 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Oct. 29 in Medical Science Building 1, room 3233. The Medical School community is welcome to visit the renovated laboratories and see the new equipment used as the department works collaboratively with research, clinical and student-led projects.

Oct. 31: Clinical Simulation Center Open House
The Clinical Simulation Center open house will take place from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, in G2400 Towsley Center. All are invited to stop by and check out the newly expanded and renovated Clinical Simulation Center space, along with the latest technology used in medical simulation.

Distinguished University Innovator Award
Deadline: Friday, Nov. 14
The Office of the Vice President for Research is accepting nominations for the Distinguished University Innovator Award, established to recognize individuals at the University of Michigan who have distinguished themselves through innovation as defined in the selection criteria listed on the Web site. A member of the tenure/tenure track or research faculty, or a team of up to three individuals led by such faculty member are eligible for nomination. The awardee receives a $5,000 personal honorarium and is invited to deliver a lecture. Nomination guidelines are available online. Nov. 18: Clinical Research Career Development Awards - Getting Started
Clinical Research Career Development Awards - Getting Started is a program directed toward junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and research scientists interested in clinical and translational research, this presentation will provide all the necessary information for getting started on a proposal.

Attendees will hear advice on finding great mentors, understanding the importance of research methods, interventions and outcomes; completing budgets; and designing your career development program. The program will take place from noon - 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, in Forum Hall, Palmer Commons.

Oct. 17: Health Informatics Grand Rounds presents Ulysses J. Balis, M.D.
Ulysses J. Balis, M.D., U-M associate professor of Pathology and Director, Clinical Informatics will give the October Health Informatics Grand Rounds presentation at noon Friday, Oct. 17, in Ford Auditorium. His talk, Mining Medical Images for Diagnostic Gold:  The Promise of Content-Based Image Retrieval,” will provide an overview of possible settings where emerging digital technology might play a beneficial role in the simplified archival, use and retrieval of medical imagery.

Now there is even more time to participate in the 1000 Pitches Contest. The deadline for submissions has been extended to Oct. 26.

To be entered, submit a short video - three minutes or less - that describes an invention or business idea in one of the following categories:

  • Local Business
  • Local Business
  • Green Campus
  • Environmental and Clean Tech

An award of $1,000 will be given for the best "pitch" in each category. The University of Michigan Medical Innovation Center is sponsoring the HEALTH category.

Oct. 22: Hospice of Michigan documentary film viewing
Hospice of Michigan has created a documentary, "Except for Six," to promote quality end-of-life care. The film captures patients' lives, struggles and experiences during this sensitive time of life. Throughout the film, experts weigh in on issues facing hospice care today and tomorrow, the needs of the upcoming baby-boomer generation and the options that are available for end-of-life care. Viewing of the film will take place from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in School of Public Health I auditorium.

There will be a panel discussion following the viewing of the film.
