New Medical School Site Focuses on Mission
We’ve launched a redesigned Web site that is organized within the framework of our broad mission of education, research, patient care and community service. Everything you’ve come to expect from the Medical School Web site is still there - information on our extraordinary research and our educational programs, for example. In addition, there are new areas including patient care and community services. Another thing you'll find on the site is the next vodcast in the Global Challenge series. It features work by a U-M virologist to help the world's leaders solve the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The site is expected to be easier and more informative than ever.

Omary to become next chair for Molecular and Integrative Physiology
James O. Woolliscroft, M.D., dean of the Medical School, announced that  M. Bishr Omary, Ph.D., M.D., will become the next chair of the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology, effective August 1, subject to the approval of the U-M Board of Regents. Dr. Omary comes to Michigan from the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Palo Alto VA Medical Center and Stanford University School of Medicine, where he also serves as associate director of the Stanford University Digestive Disease Center.

Dr. Omary is an accomplished researcher and has received international recognition for his contributions in physiology. His research involves the study of the regulation function and disease association of the cytoskeletal intermediate filament proteins that are specifically expressed in digestive-type epithelia. Dr. Omary has sustained NIH grants when competition for research money is fierce. He is a leader in his field and participates at the highest level of his profession. He is a prolific author and editor and has written more than 120 original articles for leading scientific journals. He is a committed educator and mentor. Additionally, Dr. Omary recognizes the value of translational research and has been an advocate for collaborations between the NIH, research institutions and industry.

After outlining Dr. Omary's impressive credentials in his message to Medical School faculty, staff and students, Dean Woolliscroft wrote, "Even with all of his impressive accomplishments, I have been particularly struck by his engaging, outgoing personality and his dedication to mentoring junior faculty and students."
