May 20: State of the School Address
James O. Woolliscroft, M.D., dean of the Medical School, will give the annual State of the Medical School address for faculty, staff and students at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, in Dow Auditorium. The address will be followed by a wine and cheese reception in the Towsley Lobby.

Attend Dean Woolliscroft's office hours program
Since beginning the "office hours" program, Dean Woolliscroft has met informally with many faculty, staff and students who have provided him with valuable comments and suggestions on how to enhance our efforts and make a great school even better. Below are the days, times and locations for office hours in the coming month. Faculty, staff and students are invited to stop by with their creative ideas and innovative solutions:

  • Wednesday, May 21, at 11 a.m. in room 4302B Med. Sci. I.
  • Thursday, June 5, at 3 p.m. in the Biomedical Science Research Building Seminar Room

Office of the Vice President for Research Town Hall Meeting, Discussion and Reception
The Office of the Vice President for Research will hold a Town Hall meeting from 4 - 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, in the Rackham Assembly Hall, 4th Floor. Stephen Forrest, vice president for research, will discuss the following topics of interest to the research community:

  • Progress on the U-M innovation initiative
  • Research cyberinfrastructure
  • OVPR Faculty Grants and Awards program
  • Search for an associate vice president for research for social sciences and humanities
  • New campus research initiatives

Informed Consent 101
2 - 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 25
This workshop covers the following topics:

  • Federal regulations about informed consent; parental permission and children's assent; waivers, exceptions and alterations.
  • Federal regulations for recruiting non-English reading or speaking subjects.
  • The importance of version control in managing regulatory documents.
  • Working with eResearch to achieve compliance with federal informed consent regulations.

2 - 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 9
This workshop provides an overview of the different regulations and ethical considerations for vulnerable populations.

2 -4 p.m. Wednesday, July 16
This workshop takes a comprehensive look at the issues that arise in children's research.

Informed Consent 201
2 - 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 23
This workshop covers information on writing an informed consent document using the IRBMED standard template.

Brown Jr., M.D., director of the Day Neuromuscular Research Laboratory and Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital, professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, will present, "ALS Prospectives from Genetics," in Dow Auditorium.

3 p.m. Department of Epidemiology. Dr. Hongjie Yu, deputy director, Office of Disease Control and Emergency Response, speaking on "Influenza in China: Avian Influenza in Humans and Seasonal Surveillance," in room 1655, School of Public Health I.

5 p.m. Radiology Grand Rounds. Milton Gross, M.D., professor of Radiology, will present, "Endocrine Applications of Positron Emission Tomography," in the MCHC Auditorium.

4 p.m. Pathology Research Seminar Series. Allan M. Weissman, M.D., laboratory chief, Laboratory of Protein Dynamics and Signaling, Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, will present, "RING Finger E3s in ER-Associated Degradation and as Potential Targets in Cancer," in room 4234 Med.
