Marilyn H. Vincent Professorship in Diabetes Research ceremony
James O. Woolliscroft, M.D. dean of the Medical School, cordially invites you to the inauguration of the Marilyn H. Vincent Professorship in Diabetes Research and the installation of Martin G. Myers Jr., M.D., Ph.D., as the first Marilyn H. Vincent Professor. This event will take place at 5 p.m. Monday, March 24, in the BSRB Auditorium. One week left to take the 08 Employee Engagement Survey
The 2008 Health System Employee Engagement survey is open through March 28 for all Medical School and HHC employees. Unless you are a faculty member or house officer, this survey is for you. (Faculty and house officers will be surveyed at another time.)

Your anonymous feedback produces results that drive change. Some change happens quickly; some takes time. But it can't happen at all without your feedback, and completing the survey takes only five to 10 minutes.

A departmental code is required to start the survey. Get this from your supervisor or the Web site. Help ensure we get the most out of this survey. Take it today!

U-M Medical School Research Interest Group Program
Deadline: April 30, 2008
The goal of this program, offered through the Office of Research, is to facilitate interdisciplinary collaborative research across the University that will lead to enhanced scholarly and educational activities in research areas in which U-M should excel. The focus is on exciting, emerging areas of science in which U-M should be positioning itself for the future. The Office of Research will provide planning grants of up to $5,000 to facilitate group meetings, consultant visits, seminars or symposia that will foster the collaborative environment leading to new interactive research projects. 43rd Graduate Summer Session in Epidemiology
Application Deadline: June 1, 2008

The University of Michigan School of Public Health is offering one-week and three-week courses for all public health professionals and those interested in health research during their 43rd Graduate Summer Session in Epidemiology July 6 - 25. National Symposium on Inflammation and Disease Progression
Wayne State University School of Medicine is hosting a complimentary national symposium on inflammation and disease progression on Thursday, April 17. Outside speakers will emphasize the role inflammation plays in cardiovascular and periodontal disease as well as cancer, diabetes, macular degeneration and Alzheimer’s. The complete program and speaker information may be found at www.inflammationconf.med.wayne.edu. There will be a maximum of 6.75 CME credits offered.

In addition, the WSU School of Medicine will host a poster session during this symposium. We are seeking graduate and postdoctoral students and junior investigators, to present a poster on the topic of inflammation from all institutions and universities. The posters will be judged by a review panel with a $500 award for the best poster, to be announced at the of the symposium.

The number of poster boards is limited. To secure a poster board, interested individuals should submit the title of their presentation to Dr. Kenneth V. Honn at khonn@med.wayne.edu no later than March 28. If you have any questions regarding this event, call Ms. Caryn Volpe at 313-577-1335.

Save the Date! Medical Education Day is June 10
Abstract Deadline: May 6
Medical Education Day highlights medical education activities at U-M, providing faculty, residents and students with an opportunity to interact and collaborate. The plenary speaker is William C. McGaghie, Ph.D., professor and associate director for the Office of Medical Education and Faculty Development for the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. The topic of the plenary session is "Interdisciplinary Health Science Education." The event will take place from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 10 in Dow Auditorium. The deadline to submit abstracts is May 6. For more information, visit the Web site.

New funding opportunity from MICHR/CTSA Pilot and Collaborative Grant Program in clinical and translational research
Deadline: Tuesday, April 1
As part of the MICHR/CTSA, the Medical School, Faculty Group Practice, and many partnering U-M departments, schools, centers, and institutes, announce the next round of the Pilot Grant Program.

This program centralizes elements of administration for existing pilot programs and is designed to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and support clinical translational research. New funding being offered this round are the 5K Seed Grants and focus proposals in community engagement, health disparities and research ethics.

The deadline for submitting proposals is April 1. Submissions for the 5K Seed Grants will be accepted and reviewed on a continuous basis.

Full-time basic scientists and clinical scientists are eligible to apply. Basic scientists are encouraged to submit their applications with a clinical scientist collaborator.

The Learning Resource Center is offering free computer classes
The Learning Resource Center at the U-M School of Medicine is offering free computer classes for the Health System faculty, students and staff. Classes include:

  • Beginning and Advanced PowerPoint for effective communication skills.
  • Photoshop classes for image and graphic preparation.
  • A new cTools class to show how this university Web tool can be used for personal project management.
  • Introduction to Second Life introduces users to the popular online three-dimensional world in which the user takes on a digital body to move around and communicate with other real people within the virtual environment.
