July 17: Annual Chang Lecture on Art and Medicine
The U-M Department of Urology invites all members of the University community and general public to attend a lecture entitled, "Healing Power: Art, Artists, and Disease through History." Mysoon Rizk, Ph.D., at the University of Toledo will give this lecture from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 17, in Ford Auditorium, University Hospital.

During this lecture Rizk will examine how art and artists have intersected with disease throughout history.

The U-M Medical School designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM. Physicians should only claim credit.

Certificate in the Foundations of Public Health online program
The University of Michigan School of Public Health is currently accepting applications for the online Certificate in the Foundations of Public Health.

This program offers public health workers, and those interested in exploring the field, the unique opportunity to earn an academic credential in public health through a convenient, part-time, distance-learning format.

This 16-credit graduate program is taught by leading School of Public Health faculty and is comprised of the following five foundational courses:

  • Principles of Environmental Health Sciences
  • Psychosocial Factors in Health-Related Behavior
  • Introduction to Biostatistics
  • Strategies and Uses of Epidemiology
  • Survey of the U.S. Health Care System

Genetics and Genomics Pilot Feasibility Program seeks applications
Application deadline: Tuesday, Sept. 2
Co-sponsored by the Endowment for the Basic Sciences and the Center for Genetics in Health and Medicine. awards are for one year and will not exceed $50,000. The purpose of this Pilot Feasibility Program is to encourage proposals that foster new collaborations on campus between members of the U-M faculty from distinct disciplines to focus their combined research strengths on cutting-edge questions in genetics and genomics. In addition, we seek to provide supporting funds for new research projects that utilize high throughput genetic analysis tools including DNA Sequencing, a newly acquired Illumina Bead Station 500GX, an Illumina 1G Genome Analyzer (formerly Solexa), a Roche 454-FLX Genome Sequencer and array scanning technology. Biomedical News Online - July 2008
The July 2008 issue of Biomedical News is now online. This issue contains information on: important information for researchers, a retirement reception for Dennis Martin, Ph.D. (July 30, 2008), the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program seeking faculty research partners, research compliance training and education, frequently asked questions, updates from Washington, graduate and postdoc studies, kudos, funding and award opportunities, and UMMS awarded grants and research publications.

Special notice for those with MCards expiring now through Feb. 2009
To keep up with the large number of Health System employee M-Cards expected to expire this year, Security Services is offering an alternative, easier renewal procedure to long-term permanent employees who hold a yellow M-Card that is expected to expire now through Feb. 2009.

Employees need to bring their M-Card to the Key ID office along with a signed form if any changes. Otherwise, they can fill out paperwork at Key ID. The only other requirements will be turning in your old ID card and being prepared to take a new picture.

As part of our continuing effort to provide added value service, we will also be offering extended hours for staff working on afternoons and midnights from 10 p.m. - 2 a.m. July 22 and 25 and Aug. 19 and 22. Also, from 9 a.m. - noon Saturday, July 19 and 26 and Aug. 16 and 23.

SiteMaker will be upgraded on July 12
UM.SiteMaker will be unavailable for one-two hours, beginning at about 10 p.m., Saturday, July 12, for deployment of version 4.6. The major changes in this version are:

  • Auto-save new versions of Text/Image sections ("act like a wiki")
  • New field type for Data Tables: Calculation Field (enables Data Table relations!)
  • Updated Rich Text Editor
  • Valid XML Output
  • Performance Improvements
  • Bug Fixes
