Cardiovascular Center research award competition extension
The University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center has granted an extension until Feb. 29 for the CVC Research Award Competition. There are three separate awards available this year:

  • McKay Grant Competition: Grants have generally range from $5,000 to $25,000. This competition is intended to assist new cardiovascular investigators, within any UM discipline related to cardiovascular disease, to initiate projects that will lead to extramural funding. The PI must have a primary faculty appointment within U-M.
  • Barr Discovery Grant Competition: New this year! This competition is intended to award proposals that study Neurological Complications stemming from Cardiovascular Disease.
  • Gelman Innovation/Innovator Grant Competition: This competition is intended to award innovative approaches to or innovators in general cardiovascular science.

Those who applied for the McKay Grant in the past and who were not funded or only partially funded are urged to reapply. For more information, visit the Web site.

Funds Available: Nathan Shock Center
Deadline: Saturday, March 15
The Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in Aging sponsors an Aging Transgenic Rodent/Pathology Core. The goal of the ATRPC is to provide both scientific and financial assistance to U-M researchers who wish to develop and study aged mice whose genotypes make them particularly valuable for the study of problems in the cell and molecular biology of aging. Studies of spontaneous or induced mutants, knock-outs, and transgenic animals are eligible for consideration. The Shock Center is funded by the NIA and is headed by John Faulkner, Ph.D. The ATRPC core is directed by Evan Keller.

The ATRPC is likely to make to to four such awards annually. Typical support is $6,000-$10,000 annually for one to two years. UCUCA approval is required before mice can be obtained or used in the proposal, but is not required prior to application. All questions can be e-mailed to Evan Keller at etkeller@umich.edu. For application, contact Terri Gorowski at terrilg@umich.edu.

Copyright and Publishing Essentials
All university faculty and researchers who are both users and creators of copyrighted material, and copyright law, can have a profound impact on our professional lives. This session provides an introduction to copyright questions that most affect scholarly authors, such as:

  • What does copyright protect and for how long?
  • Who owns the copyright?
  • When do you need permission to use other people's works in your writing and teaching?
  • How can you protect your interests in dealing with journals and publishers?

In addition, this session will cover the new National Institutes of Health mandatory deposit policy, and the impact that open access is having in the field of medical research. This free workshop will be at noon, Wednesday, Feb. 20 in the MCHC Auditorium. Registration is not required. For more information, visit the Health Science Library Web site.

Protein Structure Facility: Lower prices and more service options
Peptide Synthesis Service
Lower prices are available for custom synthesis of short peptides (six to 15 amino acids), for repeat requests and regular peptides (subject to sequence review). Turn around times are currently seven to 15 business days for most linear peptides. View our new prices at med.umich.edu/medschool/brcf/protein/.

Mass Spectrometry Services
Prices have been lowered for all mass spectrometry services especially for protein identification by LC-MS/MS and other proteome analysis options. We also perform de-novo sequence analysis by mass spectrometry and sample preparation. Contact the facility or schedule a project consultation at med.umich.edu/medschool/brcf/protein/.
