Sept. 4: Attend Dean Woolliscroft's office hours program Since beginning the "office hours" program, Dean Woolliscroft has met informally with many faculty, staff and students who have provided him with valuable comments and suggestions on how to enhance our efforts and make a great school even better. Call for nominations for associate dean for clinical and translational research Nominations are being accepted for associate dean for clinical and translational research in the Office of Research.
The associate dean will guide the clinical and translational research efforts of the Medical School in close partnership with the senior associate dean for research and other departments to enhance the quality and quantity of externally sponsored research. Major duties include the directorship of the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research and serving as principal investigator of the NIH Clinical Translational Science Award. This is up to a 75 percent appointment.
Nominees must hold a Medical School faculty appointment at the associate professor rank or above, be an active physician scientist or clinical investigator, and demonstrate leadership skills within the Medical School. Knowledge of the Medical School's research policies is desirable.
Nominations, or a CV and letter of interest, may be sent electronically, PDF preferred, to the attention of Steven L. Kunkel, Ph.D., senior associate dean for research, via Courtney Godfrey. Self nominations are welcome and encouraged.
Cancer research funds available
The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center's Cancer Research Committee invites applications from faculty requesting support for investigator-initiated research proposals that are focused on the cancer problem or that have clear cancer relevance.
Research Grants are available for an investigator for his/her cancer-related research, or for any interesting and innovative collaboration between scientists. The fund is available for faculty in any unit of the University. The total amount requested must not exceed $40,000.
IDEA Grants are available for an investigator who has a novel and innovative idea for cancer research. Preliminary data to support the feasibility of the proposed studies are not required. However, preliminary data may be helpful in assessing the merits of the application and applicants are encouraged to include preliminary data if they are available. Funding for the IDEA grants will not exceed $30,000.
The deadline for grant applications is the first Thursday of each month. For more information, visit the Web site.
Jody C. Ungerleider Memorial Award Deadline: Tuesday, Sept. 30 The University of Michigan Committee for the Jody C. Ungerleider Memorial Award solicits nominations for this award which is given for outstanding contributions toward the humane use of laboratory animals. Research staff and students who participate in any aspect of animal research or use of animals for education and training are eligible. The award consists of a plaque appropriately inscribed and a cash award of $200. For more information and nomination procedure, visit www.ucuca.umich.edu.
Call for Applications - Clinical Research Masters Program (formerly 'K30')
The Clinical Research Masters Program is a two-year course of study offered in conjunction with the School of Public Health's
On Job/On Campus program. The Clinical Research Masters Program was founded in 1999 and is NIH supported. Its specialized curriculum trains healthcare professionals for academic careers in clinical research, and leads to an MS in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis from the Rackham School of Graduate Studies.
Eligible applicants are U-M postdoctoral fellows in clinical departments, junior faculty and health care professionals interested in enhancing their careers in clinical research. Scholars who hold one or more of the following degrees, and who are a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident, are encouraged to apply: M.D.s, D.D.S., D.O.'s, Doctorally Prepared Nurses, Ph.D.'s with clinical responsibility and PharmD's.
