University of Michigan Medical School
Among the 169 members of the Class of 2006, over half (59.8 percent) are from Michigan. A total of 28 states and two other countries – Japan and Canada – have representation in the class. With an age range of 25 to 49, the average age is 27. The class comes from 56 different undergraduate campuses with 34 percent from our undergraduate school. Nine entered with a graduate or professional degree in another field, and others earned degrees while in medical school: four received their MPH, two received MBAs and two students received their JD.
Among the Class of 2006, 32 percent will enter the primary care specialties of Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics and OB/GYN. The most popular residency choices this year were Emergency Medicine and General Surgery (13 students each), 12 into Ophthalmology and 11 into Anesthesiology. Carrying on a strong surgical tradition in our School, 23.3 percent of the graduates will enter one of the surgical specialties. The dean called on the class to remain adaptable to change in order to advance the art and science of medicine in our rapidly changing world. He invited them to stay in touch with the School, recognizing that its alumni are the School’s backbone because they carry forward to the world the School’s mission and reputation. He concluded by offering the Class of 2006 his deepest congratulations and best wishes. |
