Dear Medical School Community –
In this quarterly update, I've included a link to my State of the School address of last week: "Creating the Future of Medicine from Discovery to Application." Here you can view both video and slides from the presentation in which I highlighted the following:
- Our excellence in research, education and clinical care
- Faculty Group Practice achievements
- Financial performance
- Challenges and potential game changers
- Impact of health care reform legislation
- Strategic advantages of the U-M Medical School
- Efforts underway to position the Medical School for the future
- Major decisions to be made in the coming year

Our Medical School is one of the top two or three public medical schools in the nation. Academic medicine is facing unprecedented changes in all of our missions and we are positioning UMMS for continued excellence. I believe strongly that we control our destiny, and I'm confident that we'll achieve our goals through individual and collective resolve and discipline.
I've shared this quote many times in many venues over the past several years. I'm repeating myself because it's a reminder that even in these times it's possible to achieve greatness.
"Greatness is not a function of circumstance. Greatness, it turns out, is largely a matter of conscious choice, and discipline."
-- Jim Collins, Good to Great
I encourage you to watch the video or review the slides and let me know your thoughts. I'm most interested in your creative ideas and involvement as we move forward.
Sincerely,
James O. Woolliscroft, M.D.
Dean
Lyle C. Roll Professor of Medicine
