Galen Toews, M.D.
Associate Dean of Research
Professor of Internal Medicine
Chief, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine
Dr. Toews is an associate dean of research and graduate studies, a professor of internal medicine and chief, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He received his M.D. from the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine and completed his residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas, TX. He also completed two residencies at the University of Texas Health Science Center, in pulmonary medicine and immunology.
He joined the University of Michigan Medical School faculty in 1987 and devotes his clinical practice to the treatment of pulmonary infectious diseases and interstitial lung disease. He also has made seminal contributions to the understanding of the basic mechanisms of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). His work is helping to unravel the mysteries surrounding IPF and may lead to therapeutic drugs that can block progressive lung damage, or diagnostic tests to make early detection possible.
Since 1998, Dr. Toews has held an NIH Institutional Training Grant (T32) for a Multidisciplinary Training Program in Lung Disease to support advanced research training for individuals with both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees, supporting both laboratory-based and patient based research training. Trainees utilize this funding mechanism to extend their research training in order to better equip them for careers as independent investigators.
He currently serves as a member of the Lung Injury and Repair Study Section of the National Institutes of Health, and as the chair of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s Special Emphasis Panel. He has also been a member of a World Health Organization committee on Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (SARS).
As an associate dean of research and graduate studies, Dr. Toews oversees the Medical School’s research mission, including guiding the School to make wise decisions regarding emerging fields of inquiry, providing strategic management of the research space portfolio, and research compliance activities. He also serves as an important resource to faculty for consultation and mentorship.
