Thomas P. Shanley, M.D.

Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research
Director of the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR)
Janette Ferrantino Professor of Pediatrics
Professor of Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases

ShanleyDr. Shanley is the Ferrantino Professor of Pediatrics.  Before being appointed Associate Dean, he was the Director of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and the Director of Clinical and Translational Research for the Department of Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases.  As a Pediatric Intensive Care physician, his clinical interests include management of critically ill children, notably those afflicted with hypoxemic respiratory failure from severe lung diseases and severe sepsis and septic shock triggered by infections.  His research roots are at the University of Michigan where he trained in the laboratory of Dr. Peter Ward studying the biologic mechanisms of acute lung injury.  Since leaving Dr. Ward’s lab in 1996, his research interests have spanned the entire translational spectrum from basic science investigation on the role of phosphatases in modulating inflammatory signal transduction pathways to translational research examining the genomics of pediatric sepsis, regulation of host innate immune responses to infections, and elucidating the molecular mechanisms of immune paralysis via epigenetic mechanisms.  Among many clinical and translational research activities, Dr. Shanley’s laboratory is currently examining the effect of tight glucose control on the immune response in children undergoing oxidant stress related to cardiopulmonary bypass for heart surgery.  Within the domain of clinical trial work, he is the site Principle Investigator for the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital PICU’s participation in the NICHD-sponsored Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network (CPCCRN) that is studying a number of outcomes in critically ill children. He is also participating as site PI for an NHLBI-sponsored clinical trial in sedation management for children needing prolonged mechanical ventilation.  Within each of these research domains, Dr. Shanley has been involved in the mentoring of a number of post-doctoral trainees from a variety of clinical subspecialties and research departments.  In light of his broad research activities, Dr. Shanley previously served as a Director of the Children’s Health Initiatives Core and Pilot Grant Program within MICHR prior to assuming the role as Executive Director.
