Rajesh S. Mangrulkar, M.D., serves as the Associate Dean for Medical Student Education.

After completing his undergraduate degree in Computer Science at the University of Michigan, Dr. Mangrulkar received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston. He then returned to Ann Arbor and completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan, serving as chief medical resident in 1998. He then pursued advanced study in Medical Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he developed his interest and expertise in technology and its interface with innovation in pedagogy.

His career has specifically focused on the use of education technology by medical students and residents. As part of this pursuit, he co-created the Professional SkillBuilderTM Microsimulation Lab, producing web-based multimedia case simulations for learners. He created and directs the Medical Decision-Making Interdisciplinary sequence for 1st, 2nd and 3rd year medical students, centering on the effective and efficient use of scientific information from electronic resources to best answer clinical questions. Also, he is leading the initiative to implement an enterprise-wide web-based learning management system for all students, resident, faculty and staff at the Helath System.

He built extensive educational administrative experience in the internal medicine residency training program as associate director for 4 years. During that time, he developed an extensive experiential learning program on Patient Safety for residents that continues today. He then served in the medical school as director for 4 years of ENCORE (an education innovations unit within the Dean’s Office), and as assistant dean for education innovation and technology implementation until accepting his current role as associate dean.

He remains active in the clinical arena, caring for patients in the outpatient setting at the University and the VA Medical Center. He is active in regional and national professional academic societies and has received many departmental and medical school teaching awards for the quality of his instruction and curriculum.

Finally, he is married to a practicing family physician, lives in suburban Detroit, and is a father of four young children.
